With mother gone for the afternoon Alice was at a loss for something to do. She wondered the large English house old brown beams thatched roof, good sized but not mansion, shrubs around back door three quarters the height of the door, and onto good size terrace of blue stone type terrace, nicely landscaped with herbs, stone steps to crush stoned horizontal path with English perennials’ and knee high stone wall defining terrace and lawn and into the back yard garden.

Alice (alone) held one arm cross her slender 11 yr. oldish body on the verge of becoming a nice looking woman well proportioned as she walked. The other arm propped at a 90 degree with elbow heavily locked against the opposing wrist wrapped around her front. Her head caulked just a bit so her mid-back length dirty blonde hair, parted messily down the center almost contained with a blue band, strands slightly apart hangs just off her head. Index finger slowly twirling a strand of hair while she’s lost in thought. Her dark eyes glaze just a bit against a white pasty English skin that shows a bit of shine but more wonder than porcelain doll like. An oval face with a nicely formed chin structure giving just a bit of girlish pudge but not enough to show. Eyelashes barely move but almost appear to be fake in their blackness and size but remain in proportion if not just a bit oversized. In her traditional black flats and afternoon jumper of blue neck ruffle like Queen Elizabeth closing off neck but with slight “V” shape at neck center black trim along top of ruffle, with white apron bib strap around neck.

she slowly moved with a fluid motion but not entirely aware of where she is going. The darker green properly trimmed boxed hedges rise just above her 5’-2” frame with evenly spaced breaks exposing a rose garden beyond of deep reds and pinks. These were formal rose gardens clipped and clean.

Frame

Not so much a garden as a large tract of grass leading to a slightly more dense forest of at first beach trees with wide large round trunks, light graying splitting bark. At least 20 feet round and 1000 feet tall if a foot. Dull light green leaves formed like slender spades but in the hundreds of thousands rustling quietly and lending a slight shimmer in the afternoon high cloud light. The beeches large bracket like roots just melding into the trunk at least two feet up the trunk. The beeches branches long and swooping as a saucer to a length of fifty feet. From a distance it is a large and smoothly formed sight as an aged soldier against time living 100’s of years.

Alice wonders toward the beeches down a slight pitch in the grass and an opening between the branches just 4 feet high and dark further on.

Frame

Alice bends slightly from the waste and slowly moves the few branches covering the opening to the side with her right arm while curiously looking into the darkness with crooked neck. Her hair hangs off her shoulder as she peers in

In the understory of the tree the branches are wide apart and easily climbable with their swooping grey arch’s acting as stairs placed just right for climbing but not evenly, they had to be one foot in diameter as they hit the ground only to become a bit more slender further out. A home within the tree to be sure with amber drying beech leaves as a carpet but little else save a branch or two, just ahead one swooping branch just touches the ground before it begins its journey back toward the sun some30 feet away at the edge of the tree canopy a flat light gives a mat tone to colors. The trunk as the security and safety monitors a girl lost in thought and wonder might need.

A few steps in Alice sees an open space and looks up and around with wonder arms at her side a moving head to end up seeing far ahead a more dense section of the trees understory but it is to far, dense and dark to see what is there.

Frame

She hears a rustling to the right side and quickly spins on her right foot her skirt twirling as if at a dance and coming to a stop at the end. Her left foot follows and stops her as her hair follows to stop on her chest. Eyes wide and moist she spies a rather large rabbit some 25 feet away (same frame) some four foot tall not fat not skinny a rather average shape, grey and dirty white fur longer than one would expect and almost kept but with an air of casualness and not caring, big eyes and black nose with long whiskers, a white snout with upward pointing tendencies, mouth almost disappears in lower snout region, straight upright ears pointing up but leaning back slightly due to motion standing upright but at a slight angle as he moves quickly forward left leg out, large oversized gold pocket watch with short red lanyard and oversized watch hands. The watch wider and winder protector are particularly oversized in the left hand and long brown cain with gold headpiece in right. All motion is forward with a stiff back (think New Yorker) as he says “Late, I’m Late!” in a decidedly anxious and irritated way. Its large feet with exaggerated toes not in proportion to its height and stately air about itself almost hide the English vest he’s wearing with cotton tail sticking out at the bottom of the vest.

Frame

Standing slightly forward with legs slight parted an astonished Alice puts one hand to her mouth as a megaphone and calls “for what!, What are you late for?” The Rabbit (in background) but closer to his goal does not reply but maintains his haste for the darker region of the beech understory looking at his watch saying “I’m late, I’m late.”

In past natural resources posts, oil and gas exploration companies have been featured. They are generally smaller companies working to make their mark and achieve “going concern” status. These companies, however, are at the beginning of the food chain; they start the entire vertical manufacturing base moving. There are, however, other “smaller” companies along that vertical chain working to put that oil and gas to use. They come in all shapes and sizes but operate to get the oil and gas to combust when and where it should. Understanding that these companies are just as solid for profit opportunity as the oil and gas exploration companies is not all that difficult. Finding them can be. An investor that can find a solid company capitalizing on oil and gas exploration is one that may also find profit.

Crosstex Energy L.P., a midstream natural gas company, works to transport, treat and market natural gas. The company currently services 4bcf of natural gas per/day with approximately 5,700 miles of pipeline, 12 processing plants, 4 fractionators and approximately 195 amine treating and dew point control plants.

Although one might think transporting and treating of natural gas would be a fairly straight- forward process, it is not. Natural forces and market conditions play a large factor in the overall scheme of getting treated product to market. This past third quarter saw a dip in revenue due to hurricane damage, market conditions and product interruption. Fortunately, the disruption was short lived, but it did show that the process of getting natural gas from here to there is not just a matter of installing pipe and making connections.

Making connections and gathering natural gas, however, did expand in the third quarter 2008 to a degree. Margins increased 13% as gathering systems and throughput increased around Barnett shale locations in North Texas (a major system node for the company with several pending issues.) Treatment of gas also saw similar increases for the quarter with throughput and larger plant size helping to maintain production levels.

The future looks fairly bright for the company as national leaders come to understand the need for expansion of the country’s natural gas infrastructure and use. The shorter term realities, however, do still hold to the nature of a commodity item and the need for access to capital (as witnessed by the company’s sale of two non-core properties to generate capital and pay down debt.) Prices are sure to rise and fall in relation to the needs of a slowing domestic industrial base, but a cycle is just that … a cycle. Finding an investment at the lower end of a cycle is afterall the trick. Lower demand will affect additions to throughput in the shorter run, but only to the degree that a balance point allows for the economy to continue to operate and homeowners to heat their homes. Gas will always flow, regardless of circumstance, and Crosstex Energy will be at the center of it all.

Looking at the wide variety of companies working to make a go of their businesses makes one wonder when and if any of them actually make the leap from development stage company to profitable. So many companies operate in the negative and on credit through the year, with only a hope of breaking through. Every once in a while, however, a company makes the leap after laying out millions to get their product to market. Jumping on the bandwagon at the right time is the way to profit, especially when most investors have been hiding in cash for so long. Risk is still there, but then again how low can things go at this point. Pharma has the cash and may be one of the few places to look for a more “stable” play.

MAP Pharmaceuticals Inc., a development stage drug company, works to develop pharmaceutical type medications primarily directed at pediatric asthma, non-pediatric asthma, migraines and diabetes. The company is more specifically involved in the medications and cardiac inhaler delivery systems involved with the delivery of these medications.

To imply that the company is more oriented toward the delivery system of the medications it develops would be misleading. It is the company’s work with inhalable drug particles, to enable inhalable cardiac delivery, that drive value in the company. It currently has four products in later stage Phase I-III development involving this type of medication and delivery system. Its lead pediatric asthma product, Unit Dose Budesonide, is in the midst of Phase III trials. Announced today, the company will be working globally with AstraZeneca to market and develop the product. From all indications regarding the agreement, the company may be able to eliminate the “development stage” description it currently uses to describe its status. Limited details indicate a $40 million initial cash payment, another $35 million at health acceptance and another potential $825 million + in payments if sales and marketing work as planned. From a separate and speculative forward looking point of view, success of this particular product would also bode fairly well for the other pipeline products that the company has in trials.

As mentioned in past posts, “Big Pharma” has quite a large pile of cash waiting to be used and a short pipeline of products and patent restrictions. It needs to begin looking further into the future to keep its revenue stream flowing. Finding smaller development stage companies is one such way to accomplish this task. Apparently, MAP Pharmaceuticals is one of those companies. Others are working to get their products along the food chain with pipelines churning. But until then, MAP is enjoying a nice holiday season and a solid coming year if and when its Unit Dose product finds approval.

If an overriding concept were to be attached to this use of active wording it would lean toward a physics analogy of getting a body into motion and stopping it. Once you have got a customer moving toward your site it is easier to keep them moving through it then using words that tend to stop them or act in an opposite direction. Active wording allows and asks the searcher turned customer to continue on toward conversion and a pleasant experience with your product or information. So, what happened to this work/life balance thing that everybody is talking about? People are supposed to want to spend more time with the family, get more exercise or just sit and think. Are we missing something here?

Supposing that work/life balance is what sole proprietors want. They’re in charge, they can make the decisions. It’s simple, hirer a few people to do what appears to be taking up all that time during the day. This would open time to “build the business” or just take a walk on the beach and think.

Controlling Issues

As it turns out, these folks have already figured out where they need the help. It’s just that they aren’t ready to let total control of their fledgling operation go. For small businesses and sole proprietorships 28 percent of those surveyed would delegate marketing duties, 26 percent sales and 25 percent operations. None would let the financials go but it does leave 21 percent for that, work/life issues and the always ubiquitous “other” category.

So, there does appear to be some “wiggle room” in there for work/life balance, but is it taken or just plowed right back into the business by not letting go? And then there is the expense. How does a sole proprietor or busy person pay for these services that are supposed to make business and life easier? Not to mention that there’s the question of how one keeps an eye on these services when not around.

Making a Decision and Letting Go

It might be here that the stress part of running a business/family/event comes into play. At some point, however, the fact that the person involved cannot do it all and still maintain some semblance of sanity remains. Only the individual involved can make the decision to implement a new strategy. But then again, isn’t this at the heart of the entire matter, you as the individual making the decision?

This report examines the North American market for personal protection products that, in their many forms, protect the wearer or associated product from harm. Analysis is completed though the assessment of six major market segments. Emphasis is placed on market information, trends, new products and forecasts. Particulate protection

Fueled primarily by an increased need for cleanliness in manufacturing, particulate protection clothing has enjoyed significant growth over the last many years. For the most part, this growth was spurred by increases in cleanroom garments. New and emerging applications such as paint boxes and the deleading of older homes, however, contributed to an increase in penetration of all applications. Asbestos removal contributed significantly to production of particulate protection clothing but is a declining application as efforts to remove all asbestos from buildings are completed.
For the most part, cleanroom growth (over $4 billion in 2007) in the manufacture of electronics, food, and pharmaceuticals is responsible for overall particulate protection clothing growth. In other protective clothing applications, the clothing is designed to protect the wearer from noxious elements such as radiation or chemicals. In the cleanroom application, however, the protective clothing is designed to protect the product from the human operator. This is because the tolerances of product manufacture cannot withstand even the chance of one particle of dust, human hair or flake of skin. As the human body generates millions, if not more, particles every hour, it is the single largest hazard to the product being manufactured.

Cleanroom technology has also advanced and aided particulate protection clothing’s growth. In the past, cleanrooms were huge technical rooms that required tons of equipment and exceedingly complex systems. Today’s cleanrooms have become much less daunting, in a relative sense, but are non-the-less a complex system. Although this may appear to be oversimplifying what a cleanroom is and does it is accurate as new thin walled cleanrooms of varying sizes are introduced to associated markets. Additionally, the advent of these variable sized cleanroom units allows a wider net to be cast for those selling particulate protection products into the cleanroom segment.

Ballistic protection

The National Institutes for Justice (NIL) estimates that only 35 percent of active-duty police officers routinely wear their ballistic vests. Although this estimate does not affect existing sales of vests, it does suggest that vests could benefit from improvements that make them more comfortable. If comfort were increased, officers would wear their vests everyday and likely spur increased sales.
The need for ballistic garments, unfortunately, is not in dispute. Marketers do not have to work all that hard to sell their products; consequently, the market focus is somewhat different than other market segments. In this application the marketer is focusing his efforts on making sure that the customer buys the correct garment for their particular needs. If a customer buys too little ballistic protection, the result is obvious. If the customer buys to much ballistic protection, a potentially fatal overconfidence may occur or the associated discomfort may result in the garment not being used.

Companies producing ballistic fabric are small-to-medium-sized and relatively few in number. Competition is fierce between the leading manufacturers, and increased share is their battleground. With the exception of the United States the overall demand for ballistic protection has been slow in recent years. Peace keeping missions in several regions around the world, however, have stabilized the market to a degree.
There have been quite a few issues surrounding the United States militaries use of ballistic protection since the beginning of conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Original specifications were required that did not meet the realities faced in these conflicts. Further restrictions placed on families trying to personally equip their relatives has not aided in righting the grievous wrongs perpetrated upon military personnel by the United States military.

Production levels have since been upgraded to the new requirements of the military although full production will require some time. The differing levels of protection that ballistic garments provide have, unfortunately, been very visible in this regard.

Ballistic protection has a stable future in the non-military sectors. If anything the segment will increase as ballistic garment stories are heard from returning military personnel. Technology is an ever-present factor in this particular market segment with materials becoming lighter and more efficient at dissipating the forces of projectiles and blunt force trauma. No material is projectile proof but the garments of today are becoming better.

Thermal protection

The key to working in this market segment is to look for applications that have not been exploited yet. Additionally, it is not necessary to make the entire thermal product to be successful. In many instances, the company may have to manufacture only a small part of the overall product to become profitable. The fire fighter turn-out coat is a case in point. The coat is made of three layers: The shell, the moisture barrier and the liner. Making one of the components in conjuncture with another manufacturer is a way to be profitable within the application.
Considering that the general concept of protection from heat or cold has been solved there are other considerations to think about when offering product to this market segment. Chief among these considerations are: weight, range of motion, comfort, hand washability and ice shedding for both heat and cold applications.
Largely driven by OSHA regulations a potential market is opening its arms to a possible opportunity for new manufacturers. This opportunity has to do with new standards from the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) for utility line workers. The new standards are expected to address arcing requirements and cold protection elements of garments. If newer materials can meet these new standards there may be an opportunity for market penetration.

Medical protection

Traditional applications for medical protection products have remained fairly stable over the last several years. These areas include: packs and drapes, bed pads, wraps and other operating room apparel. New niche areas have developed to guarantee the purity of blood and the increase in back injuries suffered by nurses. Some may think mountain biking is a new adaptation but its roots can be traced to the Buffalo Soldiers

Characterizing the history of mountain biking is an interesting task right from the beginning. The first 150 years, or so, of biking in general could be characterized as mountain biking in terms of today’s “sport.” This was, generally, because there were no real roads to speak of. For the most part, “roads” were more like mud trails unless the rider came across one of the few trade rout roads being constructed in the later part of the 19th century or wasin an urban setting.

Although some may disagree, the first signs of what might be called a mountain bike tour came about with a 1,600 mile round trip by the “Buffalo Soldiers” out of Montana. This group of black infantry men, led by a white lieutenant, were charged with investigating the possibility of using bikes for military applications. Their bikes were appropriately modified and taken over some rather difficult terrain.
Using this example as one of the first applications of bikes in the mountains may be dubious when considering what we call mountain biking today, although it does fit a certain set of criteria. Modified bikes were used to ride, where possible, in the mountains.

A More “Modern” Characterization

To reach what is more often referred to as mountain biking a jump of roughly fifty years needs to be taken. In the 1950’s, bikes were again being modified and then modified again. Although there were many companies and brands involved Schwinn became an inclusive term to describe not only the bike in general but the modified version as well. The characteristics found on today’s mountain bikes began to appear in some form or another from these modifications. Some of these characteristics included:
Wider tires
Stripped down frames
Better breaks

At this point there was, again, a certain stagnation in the development of what is now considered a mountain bike. The first names of the soon to be sport, however, began to appear. Stump jumper was one of the first names given to a stripped down version of this type of bike (and the name given to the first commercially viable “modern” mountain bike company of note.) These names and types of bikes are still used off road and in urban settings today, although most people would not know to call them this. Generally, they go by “bike.” Oddly, these bikes have made a certain resurgence and are being offered by manufacturers in the early part of the 21st century although they were very much supplanted by the events that began to unfold in the late 1970’s.

The “modern” mountain bike

Although there is a certain amount of discrepancy with regard to the exact date (1974, ’76, ’77) and location this period is considered to be the founding era of the modern mountain bike. There are two competing groups for the honor of founding the activity, one in Marin, CA and one in Colorado. Some will dispute the decision but the Marin California choice is the one that the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame chooses to recognize as the founding location.

With deference to the Morrow Dirt Club, who were making modifications to their own bikes at the time, a group of riders began to modify their own bikes to ride in the hills around the county. Largely a group of escapees from an emerging (from rampant drug addiction and poor economy) and growing San Francisco this group began modifying their bikes for riding on Mount Tamalpais (Mt. Tam.) The group (Joe Breeze, Otis Guy, Gary Fisher and Keith Bontrager) would ride in a fashion of abandon down the mountain to see who could cover a set course the quickest. To navigate turns they would burn out breaks and need to modify them so they could complete the course more quickly. It is largely this factor that introduced a bike called a repacker. The bikes breaks got so hot that they would have to repack them with more grease because it melted away.

And so it began

As word spread about these people and their bike modifications the race down the mountain became a destination for the many riders working to modify their bikes along the same lines as the original Mt. Tam riders. Modifications came and went but not before one of the more finished prototypes was arrived at through riders sharing and stealing ideas. Unfortunately, society caught up with this group and the racing at Mt. Tam ended as insurance requirements could not be worked out. Some of the resulting ideas, however, made there way into current bikes through the founding of StumpJumper by Gary Fisher. Some of these bike elements included:
Lighter frames
Disk breaks (from Morrow Dirt Club)
Higher gearing
Differing shifting mechanisms
Tire configurations
Quickly changing evolution

From this point forward the evolution of the mountain bike has been staggering. New innovations are a regular occurrence and are often found at the many professional events that are staged annually. Differing riding styles have been developed as riders learn what the bikes are capable of doing in differing terrain conditions. Naturally, larger companies have entered the market to make it a very large revenue generator.

Some of the new riding styles that have emerged since that time at Mt. Tam include:
Downhill
Cross country
Dirt jumping
Free riding
Each of these styles has a unique feel to it. The downhill is an all out mad dash to the bottom of a mountain for the quickest time. The cross country event is a fast ride along a trail with many obstacles to traverse along the way. The free ride is a combination and a fun ride to wherever a rider may choose and the dirt jumping event is one of style and form found when the rider jumps off a mound of dirt (loosely speaking of course.)

Some may say that steel has built our modern world. Take a closer look and one might find that marble is a better material to stake that claim. The value that marble has carried for thousands of years is undeniable. It is not, however, the only valuable stone found in history and also not the only one where a profit can be made.

In-of-themselves, the jade contracts signed might not appear to be impressive. However, if a closer look is taken, one would find that they are actually very impressive. This particular jade deposit is thought to be one of the oldest jade formations in China. Its particular characteristics are such that; the size of the jade pieces, physical composition and general appearance make it very attractive to artisans and commercial users the world over.

The company’s current plan is to work the entire vertical spectrum of the jade market. Around the world, and particularly in China, jade is a prized material for carving and physical structures. Within China, finding a vender for a particular grade of jade can be a very profitable venture not unlike the marble quarries of Italy. Development may have arrived, but leaders are progressing with the long term in mind

It could be the year round spring time mountain temperatures or the equatorial conditions found on the beaches but, for the most part, it is the economic conditions found in Panama that have brought real estate investors calling. Particularly in Panama City, real estate speculators are busily going about plans for high rise condominium/casino/resort projects. A consortium of European developers has a 93 floor building going up and Donald Trump has plans for a resort/condominium project on the boards.

Why now?
In more recent times, Costa Rica was the “it destination” in the region. Vacationers from around the world were flocking to that country for the beautiful beaches and relatively stable political and economic conditions. The problem was, that there was relatively little buying of real estate going on. The country apparently got stuck in a destination vacation mentality. Panama, however, has developed in such a way, with help from history and the United States, that longer term real estate development has become a lucrative option since the handover of the canal in 2000.

Generally, Panama’s time for world recognition, as a development and destination country, was just a matter of time. Developers had a past perception of instability where there was none. The country just needed to be recognized as an opportunity.

Blame it on the canal
Location and circumstance are the real reasons for the eventual rise of Panama. It was just a matter of time until the full resources of a “modern” world could take advantage. Before construction of the Panama Canal the region was mostly a haven for mosquitoes and Yellow Fever. With the beginning of the canal this issue was resolved and thousands of Americans began flooding into the “Canal Zone” for construction, security and administrative jobs. With political agreements in place, these Americans, in one form or another, never really left.

What they ultimately left behind, after a few false starts by the new Panamanian government, was a sometimes called ‘United States of Panama.” In many respects, some of the remnants of the American culture surpass the true American original. Healthcare is inexpensive, economic growth runs just a bit higher than the US and crime is quite a bit less than the general perception.

Retirement fueling real estate growth
Although general business is helping to fuel Panamas’ growth, its true recognition on the world real estate stage is coming from United States and European retirees. The initial real estate boom has largely been fueled by retirement communities located in the mountains and, to a degree, in “gated” golf communities closer to the coasts.

In the past, these retirees may have had a certain perception of Panama. Now those perceptions have changed as they visit for holiday and decide to stay. Local foods, American style shopping, a relaxed pace, easy transportation and lower prices all make for a near perfect retirement location if an international option is desired. Perhaps two of the largest benefits are health care, which costs substantially less than in the United States, and that the English language which is just as prevalent as Spanish.

Economic Stability
As Donald Trump and others go about their building activities, the economy is running right along side to fill the buildings that are being constructed. Panama has slowly gotten its economic base under control after some rocky missteps. In today’s economy, the country is known as a transit point, not only for goods but also for services. In many respects, Panama has become a cross roads for the world. The job of getting the country up to full speed is far from complete but the work is progressing nicely.

Shipping, trans-shipping
There are two main areas that the country is working diligently on so the overall economy can maintain its solid annual growth. These two areas are shipping/ trans-shipping and communications. Again, owing to the canal, shipping is one of the country’s main revenue generators. Year over year growth has been occurring and is expected to be maintained into the foreseeable future. To maintain this pace, and keep pace with escalating ship sizes, a program to increase the size of the canals’ locks and channels has begun. Currently, there is a very large market waiting in this area as is the current market for getting through the canal.

A natural off-shoot of the canal is the trans-shipping and warehousing of goods. This segment of the shipping market continues to grow and recognizes Panama’s importance as a gateway to China and South America’s large economies of Chile and Brazil.

With this recognition, Panama is a member of the World Trade Organization, a benefit recipient of the Caribbean Basin Initiative and is in current talks for free trade status with a number of countries. With each agreement, real estate will be a leading beneficiary and continue to drive development.

Communications
Another contributor to Panamas growth is its location and communications. There are several land portals that use Panama as a central switching location for South American traffic. Quite a few telecommunications companies have recognized Panama’s opportunities and applied for licenses for a variety of operations. The country’s leaders, however, will not be overrun by these companies and are carefully addressing each step as a process. The government does not appear to be dragging its feet, so-to-speak, but they are being careful. The opportunities are enormous not only for switching opportunities but for services such as high speed internet and VOIP.

Currently, internet opportunities are underserved as the government sorts out, broadband type services, computer to phone and other longer range possibilities. They want to be future looking as they make their decisions now. One interesting statistic remains, however, only 12 percent of homes have telephones.

Looking to the near future
As world real estate executives, travel agents and business in general looks at Panama, and Panama City in particular, the question remains, what will happen next? Real estate executives are diving in head first and see only profits for all sectors, Travel agents are seeing retirees looking for cool mountains and hot beaches and business is chomping at the bit for a bit more technology infrastructure. There are certain tipping points along the growth spectrum and Panama is near one, in one form or another. Today, however, life is good in almost every respect in Panama.

Now that oil and gas prices have retreated from unsustainable levels, oil and gas exploration and development companies have begun to step back and assess where their prospects for future development and profit lie. Some may sell percentages of leases while others may drill. Having data in hand to make longer term decisions will be a key element for smaller oil and gas companies going forward. Finding those companies, that have planned for the long haul, is the path to profit. Finding them is the trick.

Kodiak Energy Inc., a development stage oil and gas exploration company, works to develop and extract oil and gas primarily in the United States and Canada. The company is currently focusing its efforts on winter drilling opportunities in Canada.
Although the company has solid prospects in both the United States and Canada, it is currently focusing a majority of effort on its “Lucy” northern British Columbia prospect. For the better part of a year, the company has been testing this prospect for the best way to tap indicated reserves. With a majority of results in, it feels that the prospect shows similarities to the Muskwa shale gas prospect and Barnett shale play in Texas. Understanding that core testing is needed to solidify results, the company has filed with the government of Canada (and received approvals) to begin experimental drilling for comparative data along the edges of the known Muskwa and Horn River basin prospects. This data is a critical piece of information for the company as its general business strategy is directed at either ownership and production or sale in some form. For the moment, the company is eagerly awaiting colder temperatures to begin drilling work. From all indications, infrastructure construction should not be an issue with solid results due by early 2009, baring any difficulties.

The company is beginning to assess findings at its EL 413 site, as identified by the 2005 Chapman Report. This site (in total) has indicated shallow pools of oil (with some seep) with little gas opportunity. Moving forward, the company sees potential as it continues to assess its involvement. The company’s 79,000 acres of land in northeastern New Mexico has also shown solid potential with gas, CO2 and Helium indicated. 2D seismic readings indicate solid potential with the company assessing plans for development. Although time will tell, Kodiak Energy has lined up several projects for exploitation. It has spent time testing and making sure that a solid opportunity exists before it commits its full resources. From all appearances, Kodiak is well positioned and on the verge of revenue generation and profit.

Today’s financial melt-down continues to find investors running for the sideline. Some, however, say that the time may be near to start thinking about getting back into the finance sector. As with any down-turn, quality does exist if a closer look is taken. Larger institutions, that were the darlings of the mortgage banking system in the past, may not be the right play at the moment as they continue to dig out of the mess of their own making, but smaller banks with the tried and true main street “neighborhood banker” tag may be. Prudence and solid financial values define this type of bank. If an issue appears, it is dealt with swiftly and proactively to maintain the banks reputation and balance sheet. Old banking values may have been lost in the past, but they may now be just the guide to finding quality where there once appeared to be none.

Allegiance Bank of North America., a full service commercial bank based in Bala Cynwyd Pennsylvania, offers a full range of personal and commercial banking services. Chartered in 1998, the bank has five branches and a non-active subsidiary taking the form of Paramount Mortgage & Capital LLC.

From a general point of view, the company is weathering the banking crisis in solid fashion, as compared to other similarly sized banks. On its banking side, the company has very little exposure to non-performing assets and has dealt with those assets that have not performed to a reasonable result in the third quarter. Given the current standing of the banking system, Allegiance Bank appears to be in a solid position. Its capitalization is currently well above the Federal Reserves definition (10%) of “well capitalized” at 15.8%, its net interest margin is comparable with similar institutions at 3.84% and core deposits grew fro 30% to 40% over the last year.

The company, however, has had some exposure to the current financial condition of the country through its non-active Paramount Mortgage & Capital subsidiary. In typical fashion, however, it has dealt with the issues and currently sees no need for increasing loan loss provisions. As of September 30, 2008, the company currently carries loan loss provisions of 2.6% of total company loans or $3.5 million. As a comparison, and to demonstrate the swift action and attention that management has paid to the current banking situation, non-performing assets of the company as a whole, dropped from 4.8% to 3.9% from June 2008 to September 2008. Allegiance Bank of North America is a prime example of a bank that pays attention to its balance sheet and acts prudently and quickly to maintain a solid foundation. Its loan growth appears sound and with an eye on stability. If dipping a toe into the financial markets is a thought, Allegiance Bank may be a good option.

In today’s rocky economic setting, it is always a refreshing event to see a project with broad economic reach progressing forward nicely. Past posts have spoken to a company’s ability to make visionary steps a reality with the long term in mind. Economic conditions can make this process more difficult, but if a company has truly hit upon a solidly profitable and visionary idea it will find a way to succeed. As an investor, finding these ideas and visions may be difficult, but when an investor does, they may find the rewards profitable and personally satisfying.

Nevada Geothermal Power Inc., a geothermal power developer and generator, works to develop and operate geothermal electric power plants primarily in Nevada. The company is currently making solid headway in the construction and tie-in of its first geothermal power generating plant (with additional units in process.)
As other alternative energy sources receive the lion’s share of publicity, Nevada Geothermal Power is quietly going about its business of implementing plans for delivering clean electric power to the electrical grid. The company is far from the initial “wouldn’t it be nice” aspect of generating clean and affordable geothermal energy and closer to the “turn the switch” phase. This, of course recognizes that a geothermal electricity generating plant does not just spring up out of the desert overnight, but does recognize a guaranteed contract for the completion of the company’s Blue Mountain unit by the end of 2009. Currently, plans are on pace for specialty components to arrive on site in the spring of 2009 with fixed price line contracts awarded. This 21 mile wood pole line system is also a guaranteed delivery by June 2009 with a terminus at The Sierra Pacific Power Company. The line is rated to 120kW of power.

Past posts have recognized the company as holding solid potential for low cost clean power if they could get the project built. As that recognition was made before current lending issues arose, one might suspect getting the project completed might have run into issues. According to the company, this is most definitely not the case. Financing (TCW Asset Management) is well defined and in place, particularly for its 49.5 megawatt Blue Mountain project. As timing for these particular types of projects is an aspect to consider, it is likely that the company’s remaining lease hold properties, rated at a potential 200 megawatts, will fall into place nicely as current lending issues work themselves out. From all appearances, this coming utility seems to have all its ducks in a row with clean and reliable power generation not to far off. In many respects, past the geothermal portion of the equation, Nevada Geothermal Power might be thought of as a solid example of how to make other clean power work to everybody’s advantage.

In many instances, it is the obvious things in life that represent the best investment opportunities. Items that are used each and every day with little or no thought. Add this idea to not being able to live without the product and a sure fire way to profit is at hand. There aren’t too many of these items in the world but they are right in front of investors each and every day; air, water and to a degree food. An investor that can find a forward thinking company operating in one of these areas is an investor that will profit.

ThermoEnergy Corp., an integrated technologies company, works to develop and market clean water and energy products. The company focuses its efforts on waste water treatment processes where nitrogen/ammonia removal systems may represent capital and cost constraints to municipal and industrial users. Resulting by-product opportunities are also a leading source of revenue for the company.

Where many other natural resources receive a majority of attention in an energy oriented world, ThermoEnergy Corporation has chosen to focuses its efforts on wastewater. Many indicate that, in the not to distant future, water will be the most valuable commodity in the world. ThermoEnergy is playing off of this coming reality and working to save, clean and profit by its use and reuse. The company is currently working with a unique process that removes nitrogen/ammonia from waste water in such a way that the needed systems are smaller, less expensive and more economical in operation (30% less operational costs.) The system also generates a marketable by-product in the form of an inexpensive fertilizer and several types of biofuels. Presently, the company’s focus is on the water treatment aspect of the process as it begins work on a New York City 500,000 gallon per day water treatment facility.
Past the sale and marketing of the company’s water treatment equipment, it has found that its treatment process provides for the sale and reduction of waste water treatment by-products. Invariably, there is a by-product from waste water treatment called sludge. In most instances (95%), waste water treatment plants generate a sludge that is hazardous to humans, causing storage and cost issues as the sludge is dealt with. The company’s process leads to a different kind of sludge that is less harmful to humans. It is also rated as acceptable by the EPA to be burned as a fuel (industrial fuels for cement kilns, waste to energy plants and alike.) Ultimately, this result leads to the customer, or the company, being able to realize a secondary revenue source from the overall process.

With a recently added waste water and filtration company called CASTion Inc. ThermoEnergy is quickly presenting itself as leader in the waste water treatment and bio-fuels marketplace. As the realization that water is more valuable then other natural resources becomes more apparent to those in power, ThermoEnergy Corp. will be ready to capitalize with a ready made source of clean water and profit.

The small rectangle of a radio almost went out for good, but it's back

Most people would concede that the digital divide has come and that there is no turning back. Video tapes came and went. A car owner can no longer raise the hood of their car and simply replace a worn part. It needs to be plugged in and digitally read. Even language is suffering as kids and adults alike text in nearly unrecognizable letter groups and images. Is anything sacred in today’s techno world?

Go "retro"

As it happens there is one little abbreviation that is saving the world. The word is “retro.”As many parts of the world age there is a longing for all things old. We like all those items that were grown up with. They gave comfort; the teddy bear, an old lamp or possibly an old Am Fm clock radio. Life was less work. It had a slower pace. The Am Fm clock radio would wake you up each morning with your favorite song. Possibly it was a song that always came across as scratchy when the first Am Fm clock radios came out and you felt so “with it.”

A warm Italian night

Well face it, those days are gone. Digital is “in” and it likely is only going to get more ingrained into society. The image of an elderly Italian man sitting on his porch with a glass of wine and a pipe are getting harder and harder to imagine. He is probably living with his son in Rome with an ion air humidifier and a flat screen television. It wouldn’t surprise if there were an image of the hillside where he grew up on the flat screen.

A simple form

It might be wagered, however, that “retro” for this gentleman is never too far away. The pipe is sure to be there, and the wine of course. But something like an Am Fm clock radio with its simple lines, its simple rectangular box form it must be gone for good. How could that make a transition to a modern apartment? Even if he wanted a simple item that didn’t blink at him all the time and didn’t require a college degree to use. Where would he look for one anyway?

Where to look? Why the coffee house of course. There, where all the new aged modern kids go to use computers. There won’t be an Am Fm clock radio there but the kids will know how to find one on that internet thing.

Yes, he thinks, no Am Fm clock radio here, just one of those green number ones with the blinking part between the numbers. But there are many of those young fella’s hanging around those computer things.

Found and not forgotten

“Young man, I need to find a simple Am Fm clock radio in light and dark beige, in the shape of a box and with a simple silver antenna. I do not want one of those fancy things. Just a simple Am Fm clock radio. Can that thing get me one?

Ideas for Interior Home Design

Often is the time when we walk through our homes and think “what if.” Imagination starts to take over and change begins to creep in where once it was feared. Change is not something that most people enjoy. Change where the change can be turned back is ok. Change that is small and can be controlled is ok. Change that is irreversible is a scary thing. Change for the sake of change is a good thing that helps us move forward and grow. At least we like to think so.

With this in mind, where do we start to make changes? Perhaps you would like to do something small like a pillow here or there. Then again, maybe a new piece of furniture is in order or a redo of a room that is in need of help. Thinking about it is fun but where to begin? Try adding a few of these ideas to your wish list and maybe you’ll be inspired.

Interior color design

Color is always there. It isn’t thought about all that much, but it is there and having its way with our moods. Each has a particular affect on us so it should be one of the very first things to consider when changes are afoot.

Some say that we do not really see color but rather “feel” it. To get a “feel for color we can reference our friends at the University of Kentucky (USA) who go the scientific route by following the brain pathways to the hypothalamus for the color feelings we get. The following outlines what they have found.

White:
The color of white is a pure and unadulterated color even if it does contain the entire spectrum. Oddly, with all the wavelengths emanating from it we do not have to work as hard to decipher it giving us an orderly and restive feeling.

Yellow:
With a high frequency the color yellow gives us a creative feeling and energy. In offices where a creative bend is needed yellow is a good choice when accented with some other trim options or furniture.

Red:
Red is a hot and dangerous color often associated with love. It does not take much red to get its point across so having a balance of some sort is a good idea.

Blue:
The color blue lends a sophisticated consistency with a certain amount of truthfulness. If you are associated with this color people will feel confident about your truthfulness and ability to get the job done.

Green:
The color of green is a fairly calming color that puts people on an even keel. The feeling of “just being” is often associated with green. In some cultures it is revered while in others it is associated with death. This is an interesting range giving the long nature of the colors wavelength.

Purple:
This particular color has a variety of feelings associated with it depending upon the hue it takes on. In a darker form it may be associated with a fairly arrogant person while in a lighter form a meek personality.

Orange:
The intensity of this color goes past that of yellow. In certain placements its affect can become rather manic in the amount of personal energy that it brings out. Some unsubstantiated studies indicate that orange can have longer term consequences for newborns that have the color in their nursery.

Brown:
Obviously associated with an earth tone, the color brown yields a stable feeling in people. Close to the ground with a quiet strength is often used as a description. The color can also be associated with education and a certain amount of studiousness.

Black:
The slowest of wavelengths, black is a very cool color that projects a certain amount of power and control when used in a calculated way. To much black can often be associated with morbidity.

The feelings that people get when exposed to these colors are generally when the color is presented alone. The feelings are no less there when other trim colors are added but rather offset to obtain a unified balance. Finding the correct balance is the skill.

Finding balance with interior design feng shui

Generally, feng shui rest upon the premise that a balance between elements should exist. If one line is hard and straight it must be balanced with a soft and curvy line of approximate softness.

Entry and exit

We can begin our interior decorating feng shui at the front entry of a building. It does not need to necessarily be a home. A structure of any type works just the same. The door itself is a hard and ridged element. Ideally, it would not be there at all but since it is it should be a mixture of soft and hard. Perhaps a solution to this blockage would be a hard wood for security but with some soft inlay woods. The point being that an easy flowing entry is desired from an inner energy point of view.

Choices

Interior design feng shui also does not enjoy choice. Many structures offer an immediate choice when entering into it. Up stairs, down stairs, left or right. Not one of your better feng shui ideas. Energy should flow straight ahead and not be blocked inside the structure. Once inside the structure furniture should be a balance between hard edges that are often classified as male and curves which represent soft and fluid lines or female.

Balance

Finding a balance with these interior design feng shui ideas is the key. Try to eliminate the hard edged choices of an element. If you cannot, balance the element with a softer choice. Always try to avoid a blockage to movement like a sofa sitting in front of an entry or exit. It forces a choice and stops the energy flow.
Interior space & more interior spaces

An environment that suits our inner being is a crucial element in our daily functioning. Left to shop at yard sales only, our true selves will come out. Given our choice of location a few other ideas will come out. Left to a more common perception of what an interior room should be and you’ll find some of these ideas.

A Comfortable Tuscan Home Décor

The time honored Tuscan home décor always make a visitor want to stop and linger just a bit longer. But how do you go about making your home have that wonderful casual and relaxed feel. Try a few of these ideas for an integrated Tuscan feel.

Accessories for your kitchen

Yes, those wonderful burnt amber yellows work wonderfully to frame a kitchen destined for a Tuscan home décor makeover, but what about the accents? Try finding some antique looking clay pots for wooden cooking implements or maybe a marble cutting board to match your hand painted tiled countertops and back splashes. Just a few pieces can do the job.

Wine on the patio

The image of a patio with Tuscan home décor accents is enough to send anybody heading to the home store by way of the wine store. For a covered patio try oversized pillows in earth tones. If you’re more adventurous try 12x12 Spanish tiles on the floor with stucco walls. Floor plants will go a long way.

Classic Spanish tiles

Working toward a classic and classy end for a tile project will almost always lead the customer to Spanish ceramic tiles as a finalist for the end project. These tiles are remarkable in many respects and are known for:

Intricate patterns
Remarkable color combinations
Hand or custom painted tiles
Historical leanings

Any region that is remotely close to the Spanish trade routs of the past has found a way to capitalize, add and learn from Spanish ceramic tiles. Islamic design is, perhaps, the leading example of this. Drawing from influences of the region finds a living history of Islam and Spanish tile design. Ultimately, however, Spanish ceramic tiles have maintained their basic foundation and not become adulterated as other elements adopt its classic basic structure.

Color choices

Where other parts of the world claim to offer the most varied color combinations and vibrancy in tile coloring, manufacturers of Spanish ceramic tiles are well within their right to claim supremacy. Generally, it may be said that the manner with which the number of individual colors are put next to one another accounts for this, although the history and craftsmanship of the style may have quite a bit to do with it.

Enter with style

Seeing a Tuscan home decor as you enter says a relaxing time is about to be had. Wall accents and a wrought iron table with some flowers are a great way to start. Relaxing wall paintings of the rolling Italian hills are another great option.

Freshening up

Nothing says a bathroom can’t go Italian. Tuscan home décor elements in a bathroom can mean a nice clean tile mural of Tuscan orchards or a small inviting Tuscan town. You may be able to do the job yourself. There are plenty of sites on how to do the job and you’ll get just what you want.

A little here and there

There is no need to go full bore into Tuscan home décor. Try a few elements here and there first. Before you know it, you may be looking at redoing the floors and walls.

Breezy Coastal Decorating

Living at the coast or along a large lake naturally lends a nice light feel to a space even if it is empty. Designing for spaces in these areas livens up ones thoughts and awakens coastal decorating juices that lie dormant in most people. Decorating for a coastal space doesn’t necessarily mean being totally light and airy but it also does not mean dark and leathery.

Light and lacy

Although there are many ways to approach coastal decorating taking a queue from a nice summer breeze is a good placeto begin. The breeze is so nice that stopping it within the space is a “no-no.” Use materials that flow like the air. A drape that can catch and let go of the breeze is a common example and a good one because it works.

A light boat with an anchor

Using coastal decorating ideas demands a bit of a nautical metaphor. In this instance, try using light colors in a space with something that is darker and heavier as an anchor. The anchor might be a table or thin legged desk placed away from the main space. Essentially, this lets the space feel light but doesn’t let it appear to float away.

Outside in

In most coastal decorating situations, integrating the outside with the inside is a primary goal. Home safe home – Interior design with your family in mind

Some days it doesn’t seem safe to walk out your front door. What many people don’t think about is that, in many cases, it might be safer than staying home. Life is, obviously, full of hidden dangers that we have little control over. There are several dangers in the home, however, that we do have quite a bit of control over. Not to be overly paranoid, but there are far too many ways to injury oneself in the home. Cabinets & cleansers/drugs

Floods

In most recent years large storms have been in the news. These storms reduced homes to rubble. Most flooding incidents, however, can be remedied with a simple “sump” pump designed into the basement. Even if it wasn’t originally designed into the home they are easily installed in existing homes. If the home is in a flood prone area have an evacuation plan and remember your pictures.

Fire

Allow for a good buffer zone around wood stoves and make safe and strategic places for the safe lighting of candles. If a redesign is in process make sure that there are exits onto roofs for a quick and safe exit. In any case, make sure that windows are not painted shut during the process. Smoke detectors, in some cases, need to be wired into the homes electrical system while in others they do not. If a building permit is needed be sure to check the code.

Air

One of the easiest safety fixes in a home design makeover is the installation of a carbon monoxide detector. These “silent killer” protectors will alert the family if the heating system begins to omit poison gasses that humans cannot detect. Tragically, most homes do not contain these detectors.

What about fiberoptics?

Well, our good friends at CNN have…again, come out with an almost recent top 25 list. Although there is plenty of room for kibitzing, the list places the Internet at the top of the most important, non medical, inventions of the past 25 years.
As an agent of change it is fairly difficult to dispute that this organizational structure of letters, numbers and symbols has put a zip (no not a file type) into society and the way it tries to work. Should it be at the top?, maybe yes and maybe no.

The internet up to speed?

If a closer look is taken at the top 10, the case might be made for fiber-optics (#4), without which the internet would have a hard time functioning when considering the reaction times we now require. In fact, if several of the top ten items listed were to be considered only a few would be able to measure up without fiber-optics.
The consideration, however, is that several of the top ten “gizmos” actually run through the internet and would, likely, not be what they have become without it. This is how the internet made its way into the top spot. But would it be able to function to our satisfaction without fiber-optics?

To justify the placement of the internet atop the 25 most important inventions list it would need a social twist in its colon. How about replacing the invention of the internet with personal technology? Yes, the argument could be made that there has always been personal technology. But it would seem that at no time since electricity have so many new technology items been wrapped up in one spot over the last 25 years. To single out the internet as a single item when each of the other top ten items work in tandem with it to create a social phenom sort of diminishes the accomplishments that each of the others offer. But in most respects, this social phenom would not exist without fiber optics and all those bundles of light shooting around the world with our silly little cell phone pictures, e-mails and location services in them.

Social evolution

Perhaps it is the list itself that is blurring the line between these technological inventions. Perhaps their collective success has placed them into a category of social evolution rather than technological invention. Largely as a result of all of these inventions we have: a 20 something generation of I expect it now’s, social predators and isolation. But then again we have micro lending to desperately poor people around the world from people they will never know, surgeries in rural locations conducted with assistance from far away and loved ones seeing and speaking with one another over great distances. These are all social plusses and minuses. So, if the top 10 were to be folded into personal technology we would have that category followed by fiber optics. Or, possibly the other way around.

A little homework goes a long way

Relocation of your home base of operations to another location is hard enough, let alone for a child that is squarely situated in their own little part of the world. Generally, children do not have a whole lot of control in their young lives as it is. So, picking them out of their perceived comfort zone and moving them is a task that needs to be addressed early on in the process. This is not only for their well being but for yours as well.

If everything is to go smoothly in your move the children need to be added to the “to do” list early if long term headaches for everybody involved are to be avoided. The one thing that you do have going for you in your relocation plans is that children are very resilient. They will always find a way to cope. You do, however, need to give some help along the way so that they find a way to cope that is positive for their long term development and your short term sanity.

Age defined

In finding what particular methods work best consider the three major developmental and education related ages of children. Preschool, elementary and teenaged children are the groups that you need to be concerning yourself with .

Although each age has its own particular set of issues, preschoolers are perhaps the group that find themselves the most prone to trauma, and rightly so. This group has very little to draw upon in regards to the bigger part of the world within which they live. The world is very small and they are about to be taken into a very large and strange set of new surroundings. At this age the child is most worried that they will be left behind or forgotten. You are running here and there with no small amount of stress showing, while they stand watching. There is no wonder that they are worried.

Presents are a good thing

The thing to remember with this group is that you are one of their only constants. If you disappear for a relocation scouting mission you may not come back in their eyes. When you do go on this relocation trip make sure they know that you will only be gone for a short time. Do not start bringing days into the mix as there is little concept of time in their minds. All they know is that you are not there. If there is something that you can associate with the new location you are moving to make sure they know about it and tell them you will bring a toy or trinket back for them. So, if you are moving to San Diego, California USA let them know about Sea World and that you will bring them back a stuffed animal like Shamou the killer whale. You might also show them a picture of a killer whale like Shamu.

Get them into the process of moving, get them involved. If they have toys or other personal items get them to round them up and maybe decorate the box those toys are going into with crayons. This is so they will always know where they are during the move. These little ones are perhaps the most resilient of the age groups and will bounce back in no time once you get settled, so fear not.

Elementary school

The elementary school aged kids are starting to fall into yours and there own routines. Every day starts the same way and ends the same way. This is something that you want to pay particular attention too. These routines are also found in their every day life as well. Their school education pretty much follows the same routine each day with little variation during the week, but they know recess is coming and lunch is at the same time each day. Baseball on Saturdays and the Girl Scouts after school on a Thursday. When you are on your relocation scouting mission try to find out about these activities in advance. Hopefully, the child can fall right back into the same routine as they had before the move. This will not only make the transition as seamless as possible but it will aide in the child making new friends more quickly.

Help them blend in

This age group of kids is beginning to develop a better memory retention level than when they were younger. As you go about your errands in the new town take your video camera along and video all the important spots that kids their age frequent. Hit the local mall so that they have an idea of what the other kids are wearing and which stores have the most kids their age in them. If possible, try talking to a kid or two so you can take back some regional slang that will help them blend. Remember, the last thing a kid wants to do at this age, or for that matter any age up to a point, is to stand out from the crowd.

“We’re going to do what!”

As any adult with a teenager in the home can attest this age group is not the least bit interested in moving from of their personally defined space. They have their friends, space, likes and dislikes. If standing out from the crowd was a bad thing for the younger set try multiplying it by 1,000. In your relocation scouting, try taking the teenager along with you and letting them loose for a while. A mall is always a good place to start if you are totally unfamiliar with the new location. Most places, however, are known for something so try and find out what it is and go there.

If you cannot take your teenager with you, again, take the video camera. Teens move in packs so video them for style tips. Not just fashion tips, although these are key, but tips on how they walk and talk, do their jeans ride down to their ankles? Skate boards or motorcycles?,”7s” or holes in the knees? Believe it or not, if you can get them to look at the “move” video in the first place you are halfway there. You have likely already been through the silent treatment, the yelling and the flat out refusal parts of their move.

Tackling education

Of course your child’s life revolves around you, right? Wrong. School is just like your place of work. You likely spend more time with your coworkers that you do with your spouse. Kids are the same way. They spend more time in social settings and school than they do with you. So naturally making sure that they are properly situated in their new social setting is a very large goal.

In considering an educational situation, there are individual items to take into account depending largely on your child and how they react to new surroundings and people. If a child is from a small rural town and is going to be attending a larger urban or suburban school for their education they will need some time to look around the school before they matriculate. Help them to find the cafeteria, the bathrooms, their classroom or rooms. These education basics are important but do not forget the pack mentality you are dealing with. Where do the “bandies” hang out, what about the cheerleaders or “jocks”. Is the school newspaper located in the bowels of the school next to the boiler or maybe the “motor heads” hang out over at “Sams’” garage? The kids will find their spot eventually but the easier it is for them the easier it will be for you.

Grades come second

The interesting part in this socialization process is that it is even more important than the grades that the child brings home. If you put to much emphasis on the grades during this relocation time they will likely suffer in their personal social attempts and make poor grades. So, it sort of works backwards in this area. Let the child settle in socially first and then worry about the school education later.
Anyway you choose to approach your impending move you will likely experience a certain amount of anxiety from your child or yourself. Trying to minimize that stress and anxiety will go quite a long way toward making the whole move easier. The idea of anxiety, in this situation, is to be expected. The thing is, it can also be self-fulfilling. If you do the leg work, or homework in the case of the kids, all will settle more quickly as you move into your new home.

Talk about MSN on steroids. Pixsy .com has its little fingers into everything happening in words and pictures around the world. How good are they with their words and pictures you say? I punched it up this fine Friday morning to find Japans’ Prime Minister leaving the airport in Japan; only to find the guy getting off the plane in Washington DC by 11:00 am.

Can you say pulling together sources?, these guys are good ABC to BBC it’s here. Not to worry if you could care less about politics, or MSN for that matter. Pixsy.com does its due diligence and uses everybody and everything they can to pull pictures, words and videos together for your use. Need a thumbnail picture from the BBC taken 10 hours ago, they got it. Maybe good old Stone Phillips actually had a hair out of place and you need an entertainment shot; they got it (not that Stone would ever let that happen.)

The really nice thing about pixsy.com is that it has a balanced mix of information in words, pictures and videos. Not so much that the content is different but the way that you perceive it when you first see the opening page is different. With many other sites you get your daily ration of death and violence put right in your face in nice big images. Pixsy.com gives you the same pictures and words but in thumbnail form. Sort of like ”yup, here it is take a look if you like.” It’s kind of nice not being slammed over the head with the trials and tribulations of people in the world.

It’s not all hard news though; I mean how can a person possibly exist without having the daily Paris Hilton update or Knute the polar bear cub picture. The thumbnail of the last fence jump at the Sandown Steeple Chaser Race looks nasty.

Words and pictures, pictures and words everybody’s got’em on the net these days. Pixsy.com just gives them to you at a “kinder and gentler” pace. Say, I wonder if they have a Bush family thumbnail for my wallet?

Saddle sores and how to avoid them

The word to remember is avoid; Saddle sores are one of those physical ailments, found on bicycle riders, that are best avoided at all costs. If a rider has not been on a bicycle for some time and begins a new regiment to aggressively there is likely to be an occurrence of saddle sores. To avoid this occurrence there are several simple steps that can be taken before, during and after they occur. Some of these steps may include:

 Beginning a bicycle exercise regiment slowly
 Locate you saddle correctly
 Use the correct saddle
 Wear appropriate bike clothing
 Purchase the correct bicycle

Beginning a bicycle exercise regiment slowly

The most common cause of saddle sores is the desire to be a strong rider on the first day out after a layoff. In many instances, riders will take a long ride over rocky terrain the first day out. They may be in good aerobic shape but their body is just not ready for the bumping and grinding associated with the mountain biking experience.

If at all possible, give the body a chance to get used to the new movements and “rubs” that can be associated with off road mountain biking. This does not mean that the rider is out of shape. It does mean that the body needs a chance to adapt.

Locate your bike saddle correctly

The saddle is only one point of several that is supporting the riders’ weight. Having it located in the correct position is a key element in the prevention of saddle sores. Through a trial and error approach the rider is looking to have the saddle aligned so that a vertical line could be drawn through the forward knee and into the center of the peddle spindle when the peddles are horizontal to the ground.
There is a large difference between male and female riders when it comes to buying and correctly positioning the saddle. Anatomically, there is about a 4 millimeter difference in the bone structure between male and female riders. This means that for a better fit the saddle needs to be correspondingly wider than a male saddle. Although this is a reality it does not make avoiding saddle sores any easier as a wider seat can lead to chaffing away from where the weight is being concentrated on the saddle. In this regard a saddle that has been modified with “cut outs” or gel inserts may be an option for the individual rider.

The other obvious positioning element to consider is how the saddle is oriented at the crotch. Certain saddles are manufactured with a downward angle in mind (for women) while others need to be positioned so that they are angled slightly down. The obvious comfort issues are addressed with this positioning but it also aids in directing forces that may relate to saddle sores as well.

Use the correct bike saddle

With many styles being offered personal preference is the key to choosing the correct saddle. Some saddles may offer gel implants while others may tend to offer the ability to install a cover with inserts. In either case the rider should understand that these additions will ultimately yield less control of the bike. As the saddle sores diminish these elements should be reduced to the point where a more “normal” saddle is used for better handling.

Cut-outs are a particular feature designed into the saddle for women. Since the woman’s bone structure is somewhat different a wider saddle may be preferred. These cutouts aid in the prevention of saddle soles but are generally intended for chaffing protection more than anything else.

Use the correct biking clothing

If the saddle choices available, for saddle sore avoidance, do not appear to be working there are choices the rider can make regarding clothing and saddle sores. The features, designed to aide in saddle sore prevention and chafe, have to do with placement of padding, materials and seaming. Strategic padding is one of the better options to prevent saddle sores. This padding also yields greater comfort for rides that may involve longer distances or rough terrain. In most cases, the padding should be covered with a breathable fabric so as to aide in moisture control.
Regardless of the features or brand chosen the shorts need to be comfortable, but only to the point where they do not lose the support they can also provide. They should also use materials that breath, have properly located seams and stretch in all directions. For the most part, all riding pants provide the needed elements for prevention of saddle sores if they are designed as such.

The consumer should be aware that in today’s marketplace there are biking shorts available that are purely stylistic and do not provide any real benefit for those seeking protection from saddle sores. To avoid these types of shorts simply look for the padding in all the right places (crotch, coccyx.) Other items to look for might include a breathable fabric in the crotch, no seams in the crotch and a smooth surface on the inner leg.

Purchase the correct bike

When all else has failed and the saddle sores have arrived, and won’t go away, the rider may want to consider the possibility that they have purchased the incorrect bike for their particular needs. Generally, most mountain bikes found in stores are designed with a racing mentality in mind. Because of this, the riders weight is distributed so that more of the body weight is oriented forward. For a professional rider, or somebody that spends quite a bit of time on their bike, this is fine. Their bodies have become used to this position and adjusted to it. For the majority of riders, that do not obsess about riding or are not professionals, this position is not natural.

The question then becomes; which body positioning is best for me and my riding style, so that I do not get saddle sores but still maintain a certain amount of performance? Unfortunately, there is no correct answer to this question as style and terrain vary so much. What can be said is that the rider’s weight does need to be forward facing if riding off road is the desired end. Without this element there is little control when considering the rough nature of the activity. The problem lies in there being too much weight being faced forward. Again, this is unfortunate and must be dealt with through trial and error. If possible try others bikes to see what appears to work best for you. Choosing a new bike for a saddle sore issue is a last resort. With some luck these other possibilities will keep you from having to experiment with a new bike.

Etiquette and rules

As with any activity, rules and etiquette are in place to make the experience more safe and enjoyable for all those engaged in it. Mountain biking is no different although etiquette is more the practice than any hard and fast “rule.” Generally, etiquette has to do with making the mountain biking experience safer and stress free. Many mountain bikers may tend to unintentionally ignore these customs. There are, however, several to consider when riding. According to the International Mountain Biking Association these guidelines include:

Never ride on closed trails
Do not litter
Control your speed
Let people know you are coming
Do not scare animals
Plan ahead
Never ride on closed trails

For the most part, riding a mountain bike involves riding on dirt. Because of this the condition of the trail can change from day to day. If there is a particularly well traveled trail ruts and broken branches can occur. In these instances the trail may be closed for maintenance or for conditions to improve. Heavy rains may make the trail impassable or prone to erosion and subsequently closed to prevent further damage. As national parks become increasingly popular with mountain bikers there have also been places designated as no ride zones. Wilderness areas are one such place. If a rider is found to be in such a zone fines may be incurred and the area may be left with tire treads, which is exactly contrary to their purpose.

Don’t litter

When considering all the people that use the county’s trail system it is not suprising that trash is an issue. It is amazing how many types of trash can be found along a trail; (from every person using a trail not just a biker) bread bag ties, energy bar wrappers and water bottles are items to watch for. Never leave trash if it is seen and try to come home with more than you took.

Control your speed

As is popularly said “speed kills.” This is also true for mountain bikes. Injury is more likely the case but if the rider is not vigilant at all times being thrown off the bike and into a tree or rock is always possible. This aspect of safety can also apply to injuring another rider.

Let people know you are coming

Do not assume that other riders know that you are there. When coming upon other riders establish a form of communications with a friendly greeting or a bell. If there is a switch back or turn in the trail assume that there is another person out of sight. Slowing down or even walking past an individual or group is a common courtesy. In any event, when others are present, or likely to be present, slow down, consider your seed and be prepared to stop.

Do not scare animals

Animals are very likely to be hiding in the woods if you are in a remote, or in today’s expanding neighborhoods, area. In most instances, they will likely hear you coming and stay away. In many cases, however, they do not hear you coming. This can be dangerous to not only to the animal, as it increases the chance of them being struck, but to you. A scared animal, especially an animal such as a bear, will tend to defend itself against surprises.

Plan ahead

Making sure that the ride is equipped for the ride at hand and, more importantly, for instances that are not expected such as rain, changes in temperature, injury or equipment failure. In almost every instance of injury the trip excluded a crucial element that was essentially, very easy and lightweight enough for the trip. The nature of mountain biking can leave a rider in tough terrain with few choices to solve a crisis. A little planning could save a life.

Other considerations

Many adventurous activities in today’s outdoors have come under fire for various activities that affect the entire population. In many instances, these activities had little respect for the environment around them whether it be urban or natural in nature. One of the largest factors affecting the mountain biking community is how it deals with erosion and trail maintenance. Fortunately, many biking organizations have recognized the need to be seen as good neighbors. These groups have organized so that they, in effect, maintain the trails that they ride on every day. Not only does this give the riders a better trail to ride on but it lends good will for possible needs down the road (so to speak.)

Some of the areas where these groups are offering their support include:

Trash pick ups
Trail riding classes
Trail maintenance

Each of these areas are very altruistic in nature but are, ultimately, self serving. In the end it is the maintenance and trail riding classes that offer the largest benefits to the rider. The classes are helpful because they offer tips that will help in preventing damage to the trail system. Not riding around a puddle but through it is one such tip. If a rider rides around a puddle the trail will have a tendency to widen or erode more quickly. Riding through the puddle may deepen the depression but it will localize the problem and make restoration easier.
Trail maintenance is very much appreciated by the managers of the area in question. In most instances these areas are managed by entities that have few resources to dedicate to such projects. If educated volunteers can be put to work budgets are saved and a certain good will toward that group is established. In effect the group is “paying forward” for issues that may arise at a later date.

A little effort

As is often the case, all it takes to be a responsible mountain biker is a little effort and thought. It may be difficult to give these thoughts as you hurdle down a mountain with survival on your mind but it really only takes a mindset to make etiquette second nature.

The future

The nature of the people who enjoy the sport of mountain biking is such that their inventive bend will transform it quickly in the future. The trading and stealing of ideas and “tricks” is so ingrained that they only serve to move the sport forward. To have gotten as far as it has in such a short period is remarkable considering how long it took to get to its “modern” day incarnation. Where it goes is unknown but one thing is sure it will happen quickly now that the concept is established.

Jumping and dropoffs (article 3of4)

Finding “air” is the thing that most extreme riders are interested in as they approach a more advanced version of mountain biking. In these forms the rider is spending most of their time in the air rather than on the ground. The process of getting to the air only involves gaining enough speed so that “big air” can be found. In the case of dropoffs, this is not too much of a concern given the nature of what a drop off is. But, nonetheless a certain amount of speed is needed to navigate this type of terrain regardless of what may lie on the other side.

Dirt jumping has been in existence since bikes were invented. There really is nothing like flying through the air. Adding some tricks along the way is a relatively new concept as BMX riders experimented decades ago.

In the first few years of the 21st century, however, dirt jumping has evolved from the BMX category into one of its own. Sponsorships are common as well as television programs highlighting the extreme tricks that can be accomplished in rapid succession.

Where the BMX crowd had a bit of a rocky time, with its beginnings, the mountain biking community, in general, has not. The desire of the mountain biking community to integrate itself within local communities has gone a long way to advancing a solid perception of mountain bikers as being responsible neighbors. There will always be a few bad apples in the bunch, on both sides of whatever the issue happens to be, but generally communities’ and mountain bikers work well together.

One aspect that has helped dirt jumping mountain bikers is their outreach to define where they would like to ride and jump. They build jumps within that space and keep it maintained. In some cases there may be clandestine jumping areas but these are, generally, in places people tend not to frequent. For the most part, areas where dirt jumping takes place are located in or near:

Quarries
Less traveled mountainous areas
Sanctioned community locations
Unsanctioned urban locations

There are, however, a few issues on both sides to consider. The first comes from the dirt jumpers’ perspective. If they are to maintain their space for a “dirt jumping park” for bikes how do they secure it for a bike park. If motorcycles were to enter the park it would be demolished in little time. Sanctioned areas can deal with this problem a little more easily than other less monitored areas but the issue remains. The urban jumping community raises other concerns. These concerns are generally raised by merchants and administrators as mountain bike jumpers look for any drop off or jumping opportunity around the urban community the can find.

The end result of this type of jumping is that community assets become damaged or marred and emergency rooms become busier than they already are as riders attempt increasingly difficult jumps and injure themselves.

As the jumping and drop off aspects of mountain biking are explored further by extreme enthusiasts the equipment that they use needs to keep pace. A mountain bike that is designed for cross country or basic touring is not going to last very long in a jumping or drop off application. Some of the modifications that manufacturers are now offering include:

Differing frames
Modified forks
“beefed up” safety gear

Frames

The frame of the jumping or drop off mountain bike takes the brunt of the force from stunts. In many instances the frames will actually break from the forces generated. Because of this manufacturers have begun to offer frames that are specifically designed for jumping or drop offs. Generally, these frames are on the order of an urban bike frame. They have a stiffer back end and considerations are made for the drop outs. Since there will likely be a compression, of the human body let alone the bike frame, when a trick is performed manufacturers incorporated a smaller frame size specifically for jumping. If the mountain bike frame is the correct size for the rider, a jumping frame will probably be about 2 inches shorter.

The hub of the bike is the element most susceptible to cracking or breaking as a result of a jump or a drop off. In a drop off, the rider wants to get their front wheel on the ground as quickly as possible. This is followed by sending torque through the frame, much in the same way it does with a jump landing. As the hub receives this energy it cracks or breaks. Manufacturers have address this issue by producing a replaceable hub or beefing up the hub area. At the moment there is little likelihood that a long term fix is in the making but these modifications are a good start.

Jumping forks

Jumping forks are another area that need to be beefed up. Manufacturers are making these items with a bit more travel to accept the landing. In many instances, manufacturers are making forks that are specifically designed for jumping.

Jumping and dropping safety

As riders continue to push the limits of their drop off and jumping skills there tends to be an increase in injuries. A majority of riders recognize that safety gear is the only a sane decision. Unfortunately, many would be jumpers try to make tricks happen that are far above their capabilities. If this group cannot be convinced that proper safety gear is needed others may step in and make it safe so for them.
In equipment circles, of the jumping and drop off world, the helmet is the key element. A standard helmet really does not meet the real need according to this group. The forces encountered from a 15 foot fall onto a hard wooden or dirt surface simply cracks most helmets. These riders recommend a regular full face motorcycle helmet as the way to go for total head protection.

The other safety elements go without saying but, just in case, the rider might consider: elbow and shin pads, body armor if there are fly rocks about and a solid set of shoes. This last one might be paid a little closer attention to as many riders prefer style in this area rather than practicality. Stray rocks and sticks can put a rider out of commission just as quickly as a head injury, so this not so obvious area of protection should be checked out.

Something for everybody, if you dare (Article,2of4)

Once considered an odd site on the road or at the local park, mountain bikes have evolved into a recreational activity that encompasses several forms. In many respects, these forms have developed as media, demographics and style converge on an activity once thought of as outside the norm. The evolution of mountain biking has spawned the following subdivisions of the original off road intent of mountain biking:

 Cross country
 Free ride
 Trails
 Downhill
 Dirt Jumping

Cross country

In its most basic form, cross country mountain biking is the original form of the activity. A rider would jump on their mountain bike and go for a ride wherever it would take them. If there were a local park with a grove of trees in it the rider might decide to leave the side walk and ride through the grove. Possibly there is a trail system originally intended for walkers. The mountain biker would gravitate in that direction for new scenery and possibly a dip or bump or two.

In the evolution of cross country mountain biking this perception of cross country, although still very much alive and well, has gone away. Today, cross country mountain biking has come to be recognized as tearing through the woods on trails with obvious locations for jumps. These obstacles might include:

 Logs
 Rocks
 Streams

As with other forms of mountain biking, a competitive nature has sprung from the activity with network television covering competitions that incorporate the cross country version of the, now sport, with other forms such as down hill mountain biking.

Free ride

Mountain biking in this form is one of the more sedate styles of riding, although in some hands it can become altogether not sedate. If an analogy were to be made for free riding it might be that of a Sunday drive. Or, going for a ride that has no particular end destination in mind. In this manner, the ride might encompass all forms of mountain biking in a varying nature.

The ride may begin with a slow pace on a neighborhood road but very quickly end up turning into a dirt jumping adventure on a previously undiscovered part of a nature reserve. This type of riding really depends on where the ride takes you.

Trails

Riding a mountain bike on a trail can have a similar appearance to cross country riding although it will tend to be more structured in nature. A cross country ride may have obstructions or offer elements that provide options for “trick” riding. Trail riding will likely have these elements removed or blocked, although they may still exist.

Although there is always an inherent risk involved with mountain biking, a trail ride is safer than the other possible forms of the sport. One of the more popular places to trail ride are the nation’s forests. In most, but not all forests, recreation areas and national monuments biking is encouraged. There are some “rules of the road” to consider with regard to others using the trails and environmental care but, generally, these trail rides are suited for all abilities and offer scenic vista that many people would not otherwise see.

Down hill

Riding mountain bikes in the down hill form is not for the beginner. The form may be construed to mean any hill that has a slope, which would be true. In this form, however, down hill riding means getting to the top of a steep and often rocky mountain and riding as quickly as possible to the bottom. There are levels of ability with speed and slope being the deciding factors but, in most cases, the process can lead to extensive personal injury if the correct personal protection is not worn. Some of this protection might include:

 Helmet
 Knee and wrist guards
 Gloves
 Proper shoes
 Goggles
 Armor if extensive stones

It may be supposed that there is a defining element on how difficult your ride down the hill or mountain is going to be. Generally, this can be found in how the rider is going to get up the mountain or hill. Although there are likely others, there are three main avenues to get to the top of the mountain or slope: ride, an aerial lift or a vehicle.

In most cases, if a person rides to the top of the slope they are going to be in good overall shape and a bit more experienced. These riders are likely prepared for the coming downhill. Others may prefer an aerial ride or a drive to the top. In either of these two options the rider should be aware of their limitations. If a ride is taken to the top a road ride or trail ride down is likely. In this instance the rider should watch for speed issues and breaking. Slow and even breaking is best in these situations as a quick breaking move may send the rider over the handle bars.

If an aerial ride is taken to the top of the slope. There are likely several ability levels to offer a safe decent. Make sure to ask about the best rout down for your ability level. It is always better to enjoy the view from the bike than from the ground after falling and hurting ones self.

In many instances, the people that come up with the information or product are creative in the way that they develop the product but not in the ways of seducing the consumer in parting with their money or personal feelings. This is where your money can be made.

It’s fantastic

If a person is to make money with public relations everything needs to be “incredible or “fantastic.” Lucrative public relations is promotion of the product or idea, nothing more and nothing less. If the product were a stick in the middle of the forest, it is a fantastic stick-the best stick around. To make money in public relations there is no room for a negative attitude.

Start wide and get narrow

When starting with a public relations campaign it is best to cast a wide net within the market you are working in. After you get everybody’s attention narrow the campaign to the buyers. Lucrative public relations comes from word-of-mouth. If people are talking you’re golden and more people will want what you’re doing.

Generally, public relations is perception. Lucrative public relations means that there is a perception that you can spin anything you want into whatever outcome you want. In effect, you are spinning a product, a concept and yourself. This practice is not one that comes easily to most people. It requires training and foresight.
Fortunately or unfortunately, good public relations is a hard thing to come by if you are not ready to pay for it. They say that any public relations is good public relations. Not true. If you want good public relations buy it, plain and simple.

Global development has found Panama

It could be the year round spring time mountain temperatures or the equatorial conditions found on the beaches but, for the most part, it is the economic conditions found in Panama that have brought real estate investors calling. Particularly in Panama City, real estate speculators are busily going about plans for high rise condominium/casino/resort projects. A consortium of European developers has a 93 floor building going up and Donald Trump has plans for a resort/condominium project on the boards.

Why now?

In more recent times, Costa Rica was the “it destination” in the region. Vacationers from around the world were flocking to the country for the beautiful beaches and relatively stable political and economic conditions. The problem was/is that there was relatively little buying of real estate going on in the country. The country appeared to get stuck in a destination vacation mentality. Panama, however, has developed in such a way, with help from history and the United States, that longer term real estate development has become a lucrative option since the handover of the canal in 2000.

Generally, Panamas time for world recognition, as a development and destination country, was just a matter of time. Developers had a past perception of instability where there was none. The country just needed to be recognized as an opportunity and, now it has been.

Blame it on the canal

Location and circumstance are the real reasons for the eventual rise of Panama. It was just a matter of time until the full resources of a “modern” world could take advantage. Before construction of the Panama Canal the region was mostly a haven for mosquitoes and Yellow Fever. With the beginning of the canal this issue was resolved and thousands of Americans began flooding into the “Canal Zone” for construction, security and administrative jobs. With political agreements in place, these Americans, in one form or another, never really left.

What they ultimately left behind, after a few false starts by the new Panamanian government, was a sometimes called ‘United States of Panama.” In many respects, some of the remnants of the American culture surpass the true American original. Healthcare is inexpensive, economic growth runs just a bit higher than the US and crime is quite a bit less than the general perception.

Retirement fueling real estate growth

Although general business is helping to fuel Panamas’ growth, its true recognition on the world real estate stage is coming from United States and European retirees. The initial real estate boom has largely been fueled by retirement communities located in the mountains and, to a degree, in “gated” golf communities closer to the coasts.

In the past, these retirees may have had a certain perception of Panama. Now those perceptions have changed as they visit for holiday and decide to stay. Local foods, American style shopping, a relaxed pace, easy transportation and lower prices all make for a near perfect retirement location if an international option is desired. Perhaps two of the largest benefits are that there is quality medical care that costs substantially less than in the United States and that the English language is just as prevalent as Spanish.

Economic Stability

As Donald Trump and others go about their building activities the economy is running right along side to fill the buildings that are being constructed. Panama has slowly gotten its economic base under control after some rocky missteps. In today’s economy, the country is known as a transit point, not only for goods but also for services. In many respects, Panama has become a cross roads for the world. The job of getting the country up to full speed is far from complete but the work is progressing nicely.

Shipping, trans-shipping

There are two main areas that the country is working diligently on so that the overall economy can maintain its solid annual growth. These two areas are shipping and trans-shipping and communications. Again, owing to the canal shipping is one of the country’s main revenue generators. Year over year growth has been occurring and is expected to be maintained into the foreseeable future. To maintain this pace, and keep pace with escalating ship sizes, a program to increase the size of the canals’ locks and channels has begun. Currently, there is a very large market waiting in this area as is the current market for getting through the canal.

A natural off-shoot of the canal is the trans-shipping and warehousing of goods. This segment of the shipping market continues to grow and recognizes Panamas importance as a gateway to South America’s large economies of Chile and Brazil.
In this recognition Panama is a member of the World Trade Organization, a benefit recipient of the Caribbean Basin Initiative and is in current talks for free trade status with a number of countries. With each agreement real estate will be a leading beneficiary and continue to drive development.

Communications

Another contributor to Panamas growth is its location and communications. There are several land portals that use Panama as a central switching location for South American traffic. Quite a few telecommunications companies have recognized Panamas opportunities and applied for licenses. So as not to be overrun by these companies Panamas leaders are carefully addressing each step. The government does not appear to be dragging its feet, so-to-speak, but they are being careful. The opportunities are enormous not only for switching opportunities but for services such as high speed internet and VOIP.

Currently, internet opportunities are underserved as the government sorts out, broadband type services, computer to phone and other longer range possibilities. They want to be future looking as they make their decisions now. One interesting statistic remains, however, only 12 percent of homes have telephones.

Looking to the near future

As world real estate executives, travel agents and business in general looks at Panama, and Panama City in particular, the question remains, what will happen next? Real estate executives are diving in head first and see only profits in all sectors, Travel agents are seeing retirees looking for cool mountains and hot beaches and business is chomping at the bit for a bit more technology infrastructure. There are certain tipping points along the growth spectrum and it appears that Panama is near one, in one form or another. Today, however, life is good in almost every respect in Panama.

Tallahassee, it’s a triple threat of success

Located on the “pan-handle” of the State of Florida, USA Tallahassee is the state capital and home to two major Universities. Florida as a whole is finding many new arrivals. The Tallahassee region, however, is growing slowly and nicely. The general feeling in this regard is “thank you very much.”

Tallahassee proper has approximately 156,000 people living within its boundaries with a total of 255,000 if the surrounding region is considered. People moving to the area will find a moderate climate although humidity can be annoying on occasion. People traveling in the region will often compare weather they encounter with the lowlands of Georgia and South Carolina.

Politics and college football

Tallahassee is largely a governmental, defense manufacturing, college type town. For the most part, this works well as a triple threat for US governmental funding. Tallahassees’ business community often finds a steady stream of researchers moving in for the research money that Florida State University and Florida A & M provide. Another part of the triple threat is General Dynamics Land Manufacturing Systems (Military and Combat applications.) This outfit likely doesn’t need to many non Tallahassee employees as it likely takes people right from the universities.

There is a certain amount of out migration from Tallahassee. Not for any particular reason but for the fact that almost 57 percent of the population is aged between 18 and 44 years and in their prime migration years. In a certain sense this is a bonus for Tallahassee as they are constantly seeing new and fresh ideas coming to the city. A balanced economy and a relatively solid employee base makes Tallahassee or other Florida destinations a prime choice for those looking to relocate.

Not to fast and not to slow

Although it is not as highly publicized as other regions of Florida Tallahassee does see people moving to the area for a certain amount of even living. They describe the region as having a not to fast and not to slow pace but rather just right. If they would like to take a garden walk it’s just down the street. If a little excitement is in order the universities and their associated activities are available. One of the more interesting new areas that Tallahassee residents are hearing about is the State Capitals renovation. If there is one thing that politicians love to do in Tallahassee it is talk about projects close to their working home. And they have a doozy going on to benefit all.

Outside of the dry conditions and fires that Florida has been having of late, with some almost near Tallahassee, all is going along nicely in Tallahassee. But then again it always does in this garden capital. Families generally stay in the capital city area and life moves on nicely, thank you. If there is a political scandal it is no big deal, its politics. If Florida State University looses an athletics game there could be real trouble (LOL sarcasm.) Government, big time college football and a defense manufacturer, Tallahassee, It’s a triple threat for success.

A summary

A few decades ago the apparel industry was trumpeting the beginnings of a new era. The 1970s’ era of the polyester apparel fiber was dying and a few other precursors of advanced fibers were searching for a niche to take advantage of. Apparel items, and other aspects of daily life were about to change. Synthetic fibers, including polyester in differing forms, were ready and waiting for the opportunity.

New and amazing synthetic fibers, that could do everything but spin themselves, were beginning to find their way into products of every type. There were body hugging apparel items for style, and a demand for outdoor products that had to be ready for the worst. In the first years of the 21st century, these new materials have established themselves as must haves and continue to find new and interesting uses.

Athletic apparel and fashion

As synthetic fibers began their steady march into the minds of fashioniestas and athletic apparel users there was a collective “huh?” from the shopping public. Shoppers would ask what the heck is CoolMax?, or why would I want to use Lycra?.
Today, it is rather strange that somebody would think to say something like, what is Coolmax? What is even stranger is that synthetics used in apparel, and athletic apparel in particular, have changed the entire way that the fashion and athletic apparel markets are structured, advertised and marketed.

Before Lycra and a handful of other synthetics the fashion and athletic apparel markets had to rely on a fairly limited range of fabrics to accomplish their end goals. With advances in synthetics, and variations on each, these goals were met if not surpassed.

Athletic apparel market structure

With the continuing penetration of these new materials marketing strategies needed to change and develop along with the times. Add internet shopping, a whole new line of materials and usage, a newly active shopping public and the time was right for new marketing methods.

For example: you’re going to go camping and you need everything. Heading for the camping isle or camping store is the way to begin, right? A very large wrong if you’re shopping for an active activity in today’s marketplace. One used to be able to hit the local sporting goods store for all the right stuff. Now there is the footwear store, the camping store and the apparel gig for fashion and practicality. This is not to mention all the accessories or other athletic products like biking, kayaking or hiking that can be part and parcel of going “camping.”

Oh course there must be specific items just for that added activity as well, and there are. Today’s marketers have come up with a way to market these individual athletic products and materials so that each can be sold as unique to an activity.

Product diversification in marketing

At one point athletic apparel and athletic products marketers would sell product as a larger category within a particular segment. There were wet weather gear categories, running categories, hiking boots, and winter wear to mention just a few. In today’s marketing of athletic apparel and products each area is divided further and then divided again. Given the general nature of the activity this is not needed . However,with the advent of relatively new materials such as synthetic type materials it has become a need to separate product from product in an ever increasing battle for the consumer’s attention. Ten different categories for the same general product is commonplace.

Elements of diversification

For the most part, athletic apparel and athletic product manufacturers have taken their respective products and divided them into a few categories within which they can work to make their product stand out. These categories may include:

Breathability
Wet weather
Stiffness
Hand or comfort
Cold weather
Measurement

Breathability

Perhaps breathability is the biggest strategy in selling to the synthetic material-general athletic apparel fashion/athletic conscious customer. Breathability can be used alone or in combination with these other elements. Its use can be found in products from women’s panties to running shoes, winter jackets to summer tops. Breathability is the new material marketer’s holy grail of marketing opportunity. Just add a new synthetic materials trade marked name and the breathability adjective of choice and a new product launch is born.

Running gear, skiing gear, fishing gear, gym gear is so many applications it makes the head spin. Footwear from Van’s to back country hiking boots or ice climbing inserts. It just does not stop.

Stiffness

This particular category is a bit more advanced and is not one marketed to the consumer lightly. Sure the lower level user of an athletic product thinks a product must be good because it is made out of an “anium” or “on” as in titanium or carbon but the avid user knows what it really means so materials have to reflect the end users ability level or away goes the higher end buyer.

These products are actually higher performance products like racing bikes or mountain bikes, tennis rackets, golf clubs or fishing rods. Each area is about the primary product but, in general the real money is found in accessories, which brings us back to athletic apparel and, what else; breathability, comfort and hand.
Marketing diversification

All professional activities have to stay abreast of changes in the marketplace. Lord knows the pencil had to adapt to the typewriter and so on. Marketing has had to do the same, and in far more differing ways than any product has had to change. In the athletic apparel marketplace it was athletics as a leisure activity at first, then came a little social change with men forming social activities around the athletic activity. After that, a small jump in technology brought a glimmer of a marketing change to address the issue.

The beginning of the 1970’s came along and the first sea change called Billy Jean King. Women in athletics were a title wave for marketers. Now we have new and established materials and marketers are on the case. They have segmented product categories right down to the “skivvies”, literally. Athletics are the happening market and customers want the best and the cheapest. As China and India wrap up the low end where the upper end will pan out is anybodies guess, but there will be a segment waiting for it.

Conclution of executive summary

Thermal protection

The key to working in this market segment is to look for applications that have not been exploited yet. Additionally, it is not necessary to make the entire thermal product to be successful. In many instances, the company may have to manufacture only a small part of the overall product to become profitable. The fire fighter turn-out coat is a case in point. The coat is made of three layers: The shell, the moisture barrier and the liner. Making one of the components in conjucture with another manufacturer is a way to be profitable within the application.

Considering that the general concept of protection from heat or cold has been solved there are other considerations to think about when offering product to this market segment. Chief among these considerations are: weight, range of motion, comfort, hand washability and ice shedding for both heat and cold applications.

Largely driven by OSHA regulations a potential market is opening its arms to a possible opportunity for new manufacturers. This opportunity has to do with new standards from the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) for utility line workers. The new standards are expected to address arcing requirements and cold protection elements of garments. If newer materials can meet these new standards there may be an opportunity for market penetration.

Medical protection

Traditional applications for medical protection products have remained fairly stable over the last several years. These areas include: packs and drapes, bed pads, wraps and other operating room apparel. New niche areas have developed to guarantee the purity of blood and the increase in back injuries suffered by nurses. Largely, this increase in back injuries is attributed to the increase in the number of patients who are sedated. As a sedated patient they are considered static, or dead weight. To reduce this increasing trend nurses are now wearing backbraces to help moderate these injuries. The back braces are commonly constructed out of nylon and polypropylene webbing with an internal support system. Although these products are not necessarily considered medical products, they do represent a solid way to break into a fairly insular and cost conscious market application.

Another new application that is begging for attention is the liquid filtration application. Where the dry filtration application has long been a mainstay in medical protection, owing to air filters, the wet filtration application has been lagging. For the most part, the wet filtration application will see a continuing growth trend even as the HIV and drug resistant virus issues of the past become more the norm that the exception. In past years there was a bit of a spike in this application as manufacturers worked to fill a perceived void. In today’s market that void has been filled making growth somewhat slower in North America. Other parts of the world may hold growth potential although companies will need to search out agencies and governments that have available funds. Generally constructed from nonwoven materials this application of wet filtration has developed into an over $130 million application. A slow but solid steady growth is likely.

Cut and slash protection

Two issues drive the cut and slash protection segment. These two issues include OSHA’s continual setting forth of guidelines to protect workers and the always present specter of death or injury (no matter how small the injury may be.) Although this may appear to be a rather “flip” statement the segment does address the two extremes of possibility. Death on one side, and being pricked by a thorn on the other.

Fortunately or unfortunately, depending upon how one wants to address the issue, the pricking of a finger is the bigger of the two options in dollar terms. Generally, this is due to the inclusion of work gloves on one end of the spectrum.
As with other types of protective products specifying the correct product for the particular application is critical. If the incorrect product is specified, not only will the user be at increased risk, the product will suffer a premature failure causing the possibility of further injury. The characteristics that should be considered when specifying a particular product for the cut and slash segment include: comfort, flexibility, cost, durability and abrasion resistance, thermal resistance in certain applications, cut resistance and puncture resistance.

Chemical protection

Depending upon the size and type of business using the chemical protection product, limited use and reusable protective products are recommended. Limited-use garments are most often specified, comprising 70 percent of all potential applications. For the most part a nonwoven material is specified for wearable protective products due to their resistance to a large variety of chemical, lower cost and variable modification for differing types of chemicals.

This is not to suggest that reuseable protective products are not being specified. Enough companies are specifying multi-use garments so that a cleaning service industry has become a fairly profitable venture. In many respects, it is with the multi-use cleaning company that the life-cycle of the protective product begins and ends.

This particular aspect of protective products has developed from a more unlikely part of the products use. Since many companies, such as laboratories, use a number of protective products regardless of whether they be multi-use or disposable there is not sufficient inventory or storage space to keep the products. Because of this the companies will tend to lease the protective products as a cost measure in addition to their primary use.

This report examines the North American market for personal protection products that, in their many forms, protect the wearer or associated product from harm. Analysis is completed though the assessment of six major market segments. Emphasis is placed on market information, trends, new products and forecasts. Summary & conclusions

The majority of protective products are designed to prevent the transmission of hazardous elements through a garment to the wearer or product. This report addresses six major applications: particulate protection, thermal/fire protection, medical protection, cut & slash protection and chemical protection.

As in most markets, some segments are growing faster than others. In the protective products market, medical products are the largest and fastest-growing segment while the cut & slash segment is the smallest and slowest growing segment. In terms of size, the entire addressed market shipped an estimated 3.5 billion square yards of fabric to the addressed segments (plus $100 million worth of cut and slash products) in 2002 and grew at an estimated rate of 7.5 percent. If the medical segment is extracted from the totals 220 million square yards of fabric were shipped at an annual average gowth rate of approximately 5.5 percent.

Particulate protection

Fueled primarily by an increased need for cleanliness in manufacturing, particulate protection clothing has enjoyed significant growth over the last many years. For the most part, this growth was spurred by increases in cleanroom garments. New and emerging applications such as paint boxes and the deleading of older homes, however, contributed to an increase in penetration of all applications. Asbestos removal contributed significantly to production of particulate protection clothing but is a declining application as efforts to remove all asbestos from buildings are completed.
For the most part, cleanroom growth (over $3 billion in 2005) in the manufacture of electronics, food, and pharmaceuticals is responsible for overall particulate protection clothing growth. In other protective clothing applications, the clothing is designed to protect the wearer from noxious elements such as radiation or chemicals. In the cleanroom application, however, the protective clothing is designed to protect the product from the human operator. This is because the tolerances of product manufacture cannot withstand even the chance of one particle of dust, human hair or flake of skin. As the human body generates millions, if not more, particles every hour, it is the single largest hazard to the product being manufactured.

Cleanroom technology has also advanced and aided particulate protection clothing’s growth. In the past, cleanrooms were huge technical rooms that required tons of equipment and exceedingly complex systems. Today’s cleanrooms have become much less daunting, in a relative sense, but are non-the-less a complex system. Although this may appear to be oversimplifying what a cleanroom is and does it is accurate as new thin walled cleanrooms of varying sizes are introduced to associated markets. Additionally, the advent of these variable sized cleanroom units allows a wider net to be cast for those selling particulate protection products into the cleanroom segment.

Ballistic protection

The National Institutes for Justice (NIL) estimates that only 20 percent of active-duty police officers routinely wear their ballistic vests. Although this estimate does not affect existing sales of vests , it does suggest that vests could benefit from improvements that make them more comfortable. If comfort were increased, officers would wear their vests everyday and likely spur increased sales.

The need for ballistic garments, unfortunately, is not in dispute. Marketers do not have to work all that hard to sell their products; consequently, the market focus is somewhat different than other market segments. In this application the marketer is focusing his efforts on making sure that the customer buys the correct garment for their particular needs. If a customer buys too little ballistic protection, the result is obvious. If the customer buys to much ballistic protection, a potentially fatal overconfidence may occur or the associated discomfort may result in the garment not being used.

Companies producing ballistic fabric are small-to-medium-sized and relatively few in number. Competition is fierce between the leading manufacturers, and increased share is their battleground. With the exception of the United States the overall demand for ballistic protection has been slow in recent years. Peace keeping missions in several regions around the world, however, have stabilized the market to a degree.
There have been quite a few issues surrounding the United States militaries use of ballistic protection since the beginning of conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Original specifications were required that did not meet the realities faced in these conflicts. Further restrictions placed on families trying to personally equip their relatives has not aided in righting the grievous wrongs perpetrated upon military personnel by the United States military.

Production levels have since been upgraded to the new requirements of the military although full production will require some time. The differing levels of protection that ballistic garments provide have, unfortunately, been very visible in this regard.

Ballistic protection has a stable future in the non-military sectors. If anything the segment will increase as ballistic garment stories are heard from returning military personnel. Technology is an ever-present factor in this particular market segment with materials becoming lighter and more efficient at dissipating the forces of projectiles and blunt force trauma. No material is projectile proof but the garments of today are becoming better.

One of the founding members of the European Union, France is organized as a Unitary Semi-Presidential Republic. In 2002, France was the second largest recipient of direct foreign investment just behind Luxemburg (Luxemburg is the leading direct investment recipient do to its investment banking money transfers.) With a large corporate base France has a wide variety of private corporations operating within its boarders. These companies, however, operate with quite a bit of government intervention owing to the somewhat economically dubious (interfering) tendencies found through the country.

Government Policy

In a certain way, these governmental interactions in the corporate world have led to certain challenges that have slowed the potential of the economy. Currently, the leading issue facing the French economy is the low level of employed workers during their primary working age period. In France only 68.8 percent of the working aged population aged 15-64 years was working when compared to 80 percent of the Japanese.

Generally, this issue is attributed to decades of very high unemployment and policies by the government that let the younger population put off working for as long as possible while taking an early retirement in their early 50s’. Overall, this does not leave much disposable income for mortgages and other personal wealth building opportunities.

The government has recently been working to limit policies geared toward the current reality but only with limited success. Policies to extend the weekly hours worked in France were met with riots and a status quo situation. Currently, it is only imaginable of where the French economy could go if policies were to be enacted to stem these practices as the French have the leading per/capita productivity level in the world just ahead of the United States.

Non-resident property investment

The thought of owning a flat in Paris, or other large French city, is one that most people can only dream about. In some cases, it may best be left in a dream. The options and hoops that are presented in French cities can be mind boggling. In any situation that may present itself the non-resident investor would be well advised to have a qualified advisor by their side. The wrong choice can land the non-resident investor in a poor financial situation that may be difficult to be extracted from.

French property investing

To say that the French do things a little bit differently in all they do is an understatement when it comes to being a non-resident investor in their country. Having a tax attorneys’ advice is a very large requirement if you are going to make the most efficient use of the rents that you have earned on your French investment.
There are basically two types of non-resident investments in France for renting or leasing an investment property (there are subtle differences in using the word “leasing” in these instances so when understanding the tax code be sure to understand the subtle distinctions.) These two options are furnished or unfurnished. There are advantages and disadvantages to each although they both fall into several categories when deciding how you may choose to operate your investment. These options include:

• Lease back
• Let furnished short term
• Let unfurnished long term
• Owned through Civil Society

With a lease back you are essentially buying the property and then giving it over to a management company to then run it. There will be a value added tax of 19.6 percent with this method of running the property. The investor, however, can make several tax maneuvers available to the non-resident investor and reduce the value added tax to 5.5 percent.

The short term let furnished option is somewhat easier to understand although the term easier is used loosely. In this instance you have two options involving itemizing expenses or not. In either case the rental income threshold is E76, 300.
The long term unfurnished option works in much the same way as the short term option although in this instance the income threshold is E15,000 and the exemptions are slightly different in the second option where rental income and expenses must be itemized.

The society option is to join a group of owners in a society that is run much like a corporation. This method of owning property, as a non-resident, takes quite a bit of the headache out of following the individual aspects of the French tax code. The down side is that you are responsible to the corporation’s direction and as such lose some autonomy.

To invest or not to invest

Generally, the climate for non-resident investors is fairly good. With the arrival of a new government the investment opportunities may actually become even better. The real issue is that of paperwork and government medaling. There are so many options, reporting and requirements that an investor will often wonder if the investment was worth the effort in the first place. For the most part, it is. Most of the real hassles are found in the cities. If a more rural investment is an option this may be a consideration.

The last substantial consideration is that of social change in France. A new government that has indicated westward leanings has begun to make some “noise.” The French people are not that fond of radical change and may, or may not, respond in ways advantageous to non-resident investors. Time will tell.

Non-resident investment mortgage options

With fewer people working one would think that there would be less general opportunity for mortgage loan qualification regardless of status (non-resident or otherwise.) This is not the case as loan products are advantageous to the borrower. The consideration of what type of loan is applied for is a very important one. Be sure you understand the words, and how they are being used. Definitions may not mean what you may think they may mean. Loans available currently include:

• For purchase
• Re-mortgage
• Self build
• Renovation
• Equity release
• Variable
• Fixed
• Interest only
• Non-status loans are not available

The loan to value rate is also very sympathetic with a rate of 85% and can include fees. For an interest only loan, a loan to value rate of 80 percent can be had. Euro and Sterling currencies are available with a maximum term of 25 years and a maximum age at completion of 75. Interest rates are also remarkable and start at 3.65 percent.

For an economy of Frances’ sophistication the minimum documentation is fairly straight forward and includes:

• Last six months of bank statements
• P60 or equivalent
• Letter from accountant indicating tax paid if self employed
• Three years of audited accounts if self employed
• Certified true copies of passports
• Two forms of address identification
• Completed application form
• French bank account details
• Property documentation

Less than Efficient But It Works

The governments’ heavy hand in the economy of France has had its positives and negatives, depending upon the point of view you would like to take. From an employees’ stand point you are working less and enjoying life more, unless you really enjoy your work or work for a multi-national company. From the economists point of view the heavy hand of government and its past economic leanings make the economy less than efficient and skew overall results. France talks a good game but there are underline issues that need to be addressed if growth of true significance is to be a long term reality.

As the new westward leaning government begins to make its presence known there will likely be contentious battles fought as those in power seek to retain what they have built. Where the future lies is still a mystery although non-resident investment can only get easier from where it is now.

It is becoming a brave new world out there for those deciding it is time to play the commodity gold markets. Commodity gold buyers are excited as exchanges around the world ramp up, new funds are approved and every day investment houses offer the ability to buy the physical metal and have it shipped directly to your door.

Where, in the past, buyers of precious metals found themselves buying stock in a particular metal mining company they are now seeing the benefits of having the actual metal in their hands. They do not need to study the inner workings of a stock and worry about mismanagement or other budget line items (extraction v. price) that are waiting to bring the company down.

Who’s buying the gold?

In today’s commodity gold markets investors are learning more about the supply and demand of their favorite metal. If demand goes up or supply goes down you have a positive direction in the price of the metal (all else being equal up 22% in 2006.) Ah…you say, what could be more simple? Quite a few things as it turns out; but generally they tend to be positives if you own the commodity gold outright. If an unstable government nationalizes a gold mine or a leading economy stumbles, limiting supply, the gold stock may be hurt. If, however, you own the commodity gold prices may increase due to a shortage (all else being equal.)

It all sounds rather simple but in reality these are things that gold stock companies need to deal with every day. In today’s commodity gold market, however, the easy access to the physical metal has changed much of these worries. Instead of thinking about the bottom line of a stock based company you readily see more direct matters affecting your investment. It really comes down to; is the guy next door going to buy gold for his wife? Or, is it going to be a good Christmas or a bad Christmas?

The Season to Buy

In figuring out when to buy there are several countries and several seasons to pay attention to. In this instance we are looking to make sure that demand is increasing or at least staying even. The fourth quarter of the year is the place to start with holiday spending on jewelry at its zenith in most parts of the world. Then the first quarter of the year comes into play with the wedding season in India beginning to ramp up and the Chinese New Year occurring, all big gold buying periods. The second and third quarters are a bit slower although festivals are occurring everywhere and traditional tourist locations take advantage as they can.

India is by far the leading demand country to watch with Chinas’ population and expanding economy sure to become a rival in the very near future. Gold demand in India is largely a traditional affair with the metal being recognized as a particularly good way to store wealth and keep a new wife happy and secure after the wedding. It is here, in India, where you will be able to gauge how gold is doing. You should, however, be sure to factor in the price sensitivity that is found in India’s penitent for 22 caret gold, most of which is imported. The United States is the second gold market to watch consuming an estimated 350 tones compared to India’s 550 tones. Unlike India’s reasons for gold purchase the USA consumes a majority of its gold as gifts. As a result retail competition plays a real factor in its gold pricing and use, so again regional global pricing must be observed and analyzed as such. In 2007, however, value is up and demand will continue its pull.

Commodity gold is looking Up

Supply and demand, a good way to make investing in commodity gold easier than buying a stock involved in the same business. All-in-all it is really the same idea. The investor just needs to pay a little closer attention to a differing set of variables. Instead of the minutia of a balance sheet you need to keep track of how much is being sold and its price on any given world market. Generally though, it is the same dog just a different set of fleas.

OEM suppliers to the auto industry are finding that less (cost) is more (business).

Companies supplying interior fabric products to the U.S. – based automotive industry have seen many structural changes over the last several years. Cooperation has replaced antagonism, material recycling has replaced material waste, and savings have replaced overruns. The words that continue to be the most talked about are cost, cost and cost. Every company in the materials chain from seating supplier to fiber supplier is being challenged to find ways to reduce costs. Each supplier has offered innovative approaches, while industry has implemented several significant changes.

Most areas of the automotive interiors segment have seen their segments growth become a bit sluggish in 1995, largely because of a slowdown in total automotive production. In 1996, however, this decline is likely to reverse, but only slightly, as pent-up demand and the U.S. economy begin to pick up. The overall automotive interiors segment is estimated to ship approximately 345 million square yards of fabric by years end and struggle through a 1-2 percent growth rate. Certain applications will experience slightly higher growth as their applications continue toward 100% penetration. Other applications, however, will only grow at the automotive industries’ production levels.

Styling and seating

Interior styling has become a popular way for automotive companies to drive sales and increase growth. Always with an eye toward reducing costs and selling more cars, automotive companies have found that it is less expensive to restyle the interior than the exterior.

Color is the prime interior restyling element. Fabric choice is the other. In 1995, woven velors are the seating system fabric of choice, and have been forecast to make up an estimated 29 percent of all interior seating applications. Double raschels are close behind at 23 percent. The remainder includes flat woven (18 percent,) Tricot knit (4 percent) and leather (9 percent). Leather will likely see an increase in usage, as will jacquard circular knits.

Global opportunities

With very few automotive manufacturers not jointly owned or otherwise connected with another in some other country, opportunities for U.S. suppliers are practically global. These days, U.S. manufacturers are looking toward South America, particularly Brazil, for profit potential. Ford, for instance, is planning to spend $2-3 billion in Brazil over the next four years to catch up with the country’s top car makers, General Motors and Fiat. Brazil is not the only South American country to see automotive expansion plans. Fiat is is planning to build a $600 million plant in Argentina with hopes of producing 15,000 units.
Another example of the automotive industry’s internationalization and the opportunities it has to offers comes from Germany. The dollar’s value against the German mark has continued to drop over the last several quarters, reaching a post war low last spring. As this occurred, German automotive companies found that domestic production was becoming increasingly cost-prohibitive.

To help cut costs, Mercedes-Benz increased parts sourcing outside Germany from 15 percent to 30 percent. It also began building new production facilities in other countries, including the United States. Future plans call for production and assembly outside of Germany to reach 10 percent of all automobiles produced.

Economic forces have dictated that German companies look abroad to make their businesses more profitable. Other countries, notably the United States and Japan, have been less inclined to let market forces dictate their decisions. In June 1995, these two countries agreed to a trade pact for automotive parts and structural economic considerations.

The agreement, however, is largely based on Japanese automobile companies increasing overall car sales and on individual Japanese companies willingness to buy U.S.-made parts. Currently there is no mechanism that requires the Japanese to make such purchases. (It should be noted that Japanese auto plants in the United States do buy a substantial amount of automotive interior fabric.)

However, if Japanese companies begin to buy even a fraction of their parts from American sources, many tier one and tier two suppliers will benefit. Based on American projections of future Japanese production figures, U.S. suppliers can expect an increase of approximately 25 percent (2.65million units, $6.75 billion in parts.) in transplant production, the possible purchase of $2 billion in export parts, and 200 more U.S. owned dealerships in Japan.

Strengthening

Although several issues face the automotive industry, its manufacturing process continues to become more efficient and competitive. Revenue per car continues to increase as suppliers find more efficient ways of providing better, more cost effective, products.

Not many industries can say that the final assembler has a good idea of how the initial material is manufactured and used. The automotive industry can. The shocks that suppliers have felt in the past have made them stronger and more innovative.

Still, the automotive market continues to evolve rapidly, and the future holds numerous new challenges requiring suppliers to remain nimble in their manufacturing processes.

Finding a way to have a website rank high among all websites listed is an ongoing process that can take many forms. Finding a popular link, laying out a page or offering services have become popular methods, for the moment, but are subject to the whims and trends that move through the web. Some of the more current social media methods of obtaining a higher search engine ranking include:

Incoming links

Having links associated with a site is one of the most recognized forms of enhancing a websites ranking. In using incoming links the site is taking advantage of the reputation and content that the incoming link has to offer. In most instances, the best links are associated with educational institutions or governmental agencies, which give a substantial amount of added information about the subject in question. This is why the web search engines value the .edu and .gov links so highly.
Even though the .edu and .gov links are highly valued they do not necessarily rank as the best incoming links. The incoming link only needs to have a particular relevance to the subject at hand. The link does, however, need to be monitored because it will directly affect your sites ranking if something on it changes for the good or bad.

Popular content

The notion that an incoming link does not need to be from a source that is highly regarded is a phenomenon of changing internet socialization. Social links flow with current thinking and hold sway one week while not the next. Some may include:

The reality that these trends come and go so quickly, however, means that maintenance of a site is a priority. Having outdated content is a quick way to reduce a sites ranking rather than increase it.

New technologies
As social trends come and go, so do new technologies appear. Being able to use a new technology to advantage is a good way to increase traffic and, as such, the sites ranking. In many such cases these new technologies are only an opening use of the technology. Finding out how the public will eventually decide to use it is the key to incorporating it into a website and increasing rank and traffic.

The pay methods that can be used are no less or worse than the free methods. They simply cut down on the required effort and give the webmaster the ability to pick and choose which links he wishes to include. Increased web traffic is by no means a guarantee with the fee based methods but rather another option to follow.
There are so many potential ways to drive traffic to the desired site. Some people have tried a majority of them and have offerings regarding success rates. There are several aspects that can be taken under consideration for getting a website noticed while not being noticed. The trick is not to be overly “heavy handed” about the process. Some of these aspects may include

 Page layout
 Headings
 Links

Each of these areas is key to obtaining a higher rank in the website rankings. In addressing each, however, understand that there will be people reading and looking at what you are doing. It is this concept that will help you to appear natural because it is how the web crawler is looking at the page or; from the perspective of “Joe somebody” looking at the page. The key? Content

Content is the number one thing that a search engine web crawler is considering when it decides if a web page is “close” to what the user is looking for. The topic of how search engines determine which site will be ranked where is always a hot topic when deciding what to include or not to include on your site. Finding your site ranked high on a search engines list depends on several factors. Choosing and placing a keyword, however, are the elements that will most likely get your site into the top eight. When choosing and placing your keywords there are several considerations:

Placement

Placement is perhaps the most important consideration for a high ranking. Even before you have chosen your keyword you should be aware of where it will be used and how. Generally, the keyword should be found in the first heading or H1. This placement is not mandatory but highly recommended as most search engines look for a relevant term here.

Relevance

It would not make a whole lot of sense to use a keyword that did not have relevance but using similar words can have a similar effect. If your relevant keyword is one that is used often by others it may doom your site to obscurity. If you use that word along with a less frequently used relevant word you may see substantially better results.

Density

Using density of a keyword is an important aspect of a high ranking. The density, however, must be tempered to a degree because if it is used to often and in the wrong way the site may get barred for “breaking the rules” or ranked less high.

Content

With the possible exception of the H1 portion of your home page, content is the driving force of your ranking. The search engine crawler will rate your content on relevance, location, incoming links and key word density.

 Relevance

The content found on the home page should have some relation to the site. Although the general theme may stay, the content should be changed, on average, about once per month.

 The location of the content is just as important as the content itself. If the content is located near relevant aspects of the page, such as advertisements, the page will receive a better ranking.

 Incoming links are considered as significant ranking criteria by many, but not all, search engines. These links could have your keywords in their link but this is not necessary. In either event they need to be quality links tied to the content.

 Density is perhaps the largest keyword factor to consider in your home page content. The density needs to relatively significant although it cannot be overwhelming. If it is not relevant to the content or is too heavy handed in use the search engine may view this as a negative and rank the site lower or ban the site all together.

Choosing the keyword is just as important as how and where you place it. Generally, relevance and how it is perceived by the person doing the search are the important point to consider. Relevance, however, can be viewed in two ways for your use and effectiveness. If you choose a keyword that is fairly popular you will be placed along with a multitude of other users of the word. This may have the unintended effect of lowering your ranking. Because of this, the use of a word that is close to the popular word but not exactly the same may lead to a higher ranking and better results.

Keywords v. Keyword Phrases

One of the beginning steps in getting a user to your site is choosing the keywords or keyword phrases for use on your site. Ultimately, you are trying to incorporate the same keywords onto your site that a user will enter into the search engine window. The word(s) could really be anything but being relevant and specific are the two forms that should be considered.

Keywords

Using a one word keyword is an option. Using this one word, however, is not likely to accomplish the task of getting your site listed in the top page or two of the featured results. The problem is, that a one word keyword just leaves to many general options. The end result of using just one word is the attraction of millions of possible sites in the ranking and not the high ranking you desire.

• Cars
• Pickles

Keywords obviously lend themselves to a keyword phrase. Using the one word within the phrase, however, leads to how the word is perceived, and the many forms that that one word might take. When the word “lift” is used, does it mean to “pick up” or a device to move a person from one building floor to the next?, or, for that matter does it mean elevator. With this in mind it would appear that several words used together in the form of a specific phrase would be more specific to attracting that one desired person to your site.

Developing phrase words

Developing these phrases is difficult because, as illustrated, a different word or set of words can mean differing things to differing people. Some considerations may include:

 Do different common words have differing usages i.e. lift-elevator
 Is the phrase to specific i.e. car seat v. child car seat restraints
 Can the word be used in the plural
 Are there spelling variations or is the word commonly misspelled

In certain instances each of these examples can lead to a positive or negative outcome for your ranking or conversion rate. In the first two examples the net effect may be a higher overall ranking but the addition of users that are not, generally, interested in one aspect of the intended product or service.

In the last two examples the overall effect is the same, to pull in people intended and not intended. In this case the effect is intended and may raise your ranking as the number of visits has risen. In either of these cases you are trying to gauge people and what they may or may not enter on purpose.

Don’t assume you’re right

Whichever strategy is taken there is one aspect of making a final decision that you should follow, don’t guess or think you are right. Just because you think in this way or that it does not mean that the general population thinks in the same way.
The best strategy to follow once you have a list of potential words and or phrases in mind is to make a list and go to a crowded market or mall and start to ask people what they associate with the words or phrases that you have come up with. It is likely that your initial feelings about the words are incorrect.

It may be hard to believe but search engines are lazy. Generally, they do not like to run up against things that make them slow down and look around. For this reason alone it is wise to be search engine friendly.

On the look-out

There are two main things to be on the lookout for when trying to be search engine friendly. The first item is to stay away from excess symbols where they may not usually appear. The second item is to put words where they would be expected to appear, by a reasonable person, so that the search engine can easily recognize them and move on quickly.

Stopping to take a look

Using quote marks in a title is one way to be unfriendly to a search engine. In this instance, the search engine is flying along looking for a keyword in certain places. One of those places is in the title of the first website page. Since the search engine is looking for a sting of letters and not a string of letters with a set of quotes around them it needs to slow down and check it out. In this instence the search engine is checking to see if the letters it wants are there but with quotes around them. This is not a good thing and not search engine friendly.

Keep it moving

The best way to be search engine friendly is to keep the thing moving. It expects to see key words in the title, in the relevant content at about a 5 percent density, a help section at the bottom of the page and maybe some relevant links. Don’t try and hide anything. This will slow it down to take a look. The main idea is to get the thing up to 100kph and keep it there.
